NO! Bruising is not normal. Neither are pressure sores from casts. Your

baby must be growing so fast that he is outgrowing his casts. You should talk

to

the doctor about changing the casts more frequently. How often does he get

new casts now? Has the doctor ever mentioned that since Jasper is growing so

fast that he may need to have them changed more often?

Kaitlin had her casts changed every week and we never had so much as a red

spot when we took the cast off. I hope this helps and I hope Jasper's feet get

better.

I think that the bruising is less about growth and more about poor circulation

in an infant. After Kai's first cast change, he had one big bruise from knee to

ankle ... or rather, what looked like a bruise. The cast tech massaged his leg

for about 15 mins and then had us do it for another 10 mins with some good

lotion and the bruising was gone. The tech was careful to put the next cast on

a little less tight.

However, when he was recasted this last winter (at 15 mo old) the tech was

experimenting with how tight he could comfortably put a cast on - most

expecially since these were knee length casts (long story, but this was approved

by Dr P) and he put the casts on very tightly - mind you, these were 2 week

casts - and there was no bruising. The cotton material inside the casts

compresses and ends up leaving plenty of room.

Take what you will from all of that, but my end suggestion is to take a nice,

thick lotion to the cast changing and massage the leg after the cast comes off

and see it that helps. Newborns nortoriously have bad circulation (Kai actually

had blue nail beds on both fingers and toes for several months his circulation

was so bad!)

bruising in casts

Hi,

Jasper will have his casts changed again in the morning. Last week he changed

from his

second to third cast. His left foot has gone from 4.5 before casting to 1.5,

right foot 4.5 to

3 (a bit stiffer). Last week after the casts came off there was a lot of

bruising along both

feet and pressure soes which hadn't opened but were very red and sore. Both feet

were

swollen but we were expercting this. Is bruising normal? Could it be attributed

to the fact

that he is a low birth weight baby and is growing very fast (around 21

ounces/day or 60

grams) or are his feet slipping?

Other than this the position of his feet are looking better each time,

Tamsin

does bring up a good point about the pressure sores. Those definitely

need to be addressed. But, I would still suggest trying the massage to see if

that helps with the bruising :)
