Guest guest
Hi, and all! I've probably had lupus all my life, but wasn't diagnosed with it until almost all of my hair had fallen out. I became bald, and had to wear wigs for almost 5 years before the hair grew back. I still have patches where I have nothing, but at least I can cover up the spots with the hair that is there. In my experience, after trying creams, injections, pills, and rubs, I truly think that the thing that helped me most was accepting the hair loss and working with it. Yes, it is terrible to beome bald or to have such large patches that you can't cover them. And to have your hair sail away on the wind -- yipes! But after I became resolved to my bald state, I found that there were some things to be grateful for: 1) When you have to wear wigs, you NEVER have a bad hair day! 2) You can change your look at the drop of a wig -- no messy dyes or dos...you can be long, short, teased or straight and any color of the rainbow. (And I got a lot of laughs watching my neighbors' reactions to my frequently-changing looks!) 3) When I didn't have to fuss over my hair, I had to look more deeply inward -- and found that being bald builds character. Or, rather, you BECOME a character. Quite a lively one, at that. 4) For the people who would insist that I wasn't sick because I didn't look it, I had only to doff my wig and they'd change their tune. There are other positive things, I'm sure. But these are the most obvious ones to me. I've also discovered happiness with hats...but that's another email!
