Guest guest
TJ, Things are so miserable for you and your Mom right now - I'm so sorry. I will be praying for you both! Hang in there! Love Lana Love Lana 0 :-) - Attn Mike- sorry for the delay Hugssssss Mike- Sorry it took me so long to write back- this cold is a nasty one- has had my butt in bed a lot the past few days....... I come out only for a sip of coffee-diet coke and meds...... sit through a few e-mails but by the time I get to the end, rooms spinning so I go back to the drawing board. Its just plain miserable- like swallowing cement blocks....... I did have an Aunt pick me up some dri ix or al and I think its helping some as it was beginning to try to go up to my ears- I hate that feeling.......... I lost my voice, - well not completely, I still have a squeak- Mom has coughing and she too is miserable as all get out......... but other than that- things are the same. I did go to the site and check out the book and will definitely make an order through there......... thanks much.......... I love the fact too that some of the money helps EDSr's......... Mom and I both experience leg cramps- I do not as much since diagnosis of EDS and all the medicines I am on- but I do think my best fighter for it was that quinine- 260 mgs every night......... tastes horrible...... even though you don't have it in your mouth for long- just like a grapefruit rind but sure has helped me a lot....... and another plus is mosquitoes seem to hate it and stay away from me if I do go out. Mom is on nothing for hers- I asked why she didn't ask her dr for quinine - just to try- he told her , no one says it works for them......... well so? Why not see if it will for her......... what a flake.......... so not sure that he gave her anything at all for that......... don't believe he did. When I get a leg cramp the only thing I can do is get up and walk back n forth, back n forth...... a bit hard to do when you can't stand long........ Her remedy is to hope ( dressed ) into the shower stall and aim the hot hose at her legs........ I have tried direct pressure on one during the spasms but that only worsened it...... am not sure why- but it did...... so I don't touch them any more at all...........Not sure on mom- will have to ask her if she's tried that one. I guess for your second technique- I've tried but in a different way- if they were in my toes- ( a few yrs ago ) - I would put them on the edge of something - chair, wall, whatever was handy and push down with my toes making them do the opposite of what they felt like they wanted to do. And yes that did help at the time ( but only for my toes ) I think mine are caused by thrombosis in the past and now due to leg muscles being so whats the word I want- hmmmmm- darn it, I can't think of the word for the life of me........... since the operations and such and not being used as much - they have become _____________________ lol that didn't help............. they have no umph- no pizzazz- only thing they can do right is hurt........... the muscles have atrophied??????????? yes yes thats the word but not sure of the spelling....... whew , I'm glad I got that out- otherwise I'd have been up all night trying to remember the word I was trying to think of............ Plus , before this happened, dr said I was lacking mineral I do believe........ many years ago so unsure now really.......... I do take loads of calcium because I can't intake it any other way than by a pill...... because he told me that should help...... well, it did but not totally---- and I've had some doozies - I mean actually throw me out of a deep sleep to a standing, screaming position........... Mom has too but hers is most likely from diabities? Is that normal do you think to be one of the diabetic symptoms - maybe someone on the board with diabeties has the same problem, if so holler....... would love to give her some relief..... Why is May 12th taking so long to get here........... I so bad want her in to that dr........ Thanks again for all your help- again sorry for the delay........ Hope you are as well as can be- and that goes for the rest of you out here as well........... Hugssssssssssssssssss TJ ... the book is available at ? ...any of your " weird stuff " to help with a quick remedy for leg cramps? ---------- You can generally, but not always, find it at and Noble or B. Dalton. Unfortunately, any time I have seen it at either, they have usually just had one or two copies. It isn't stocked like a top ten best seller item. What I do on most of the books I pick up like this is to just go to the " EDS Today " website, click their link to amazon.com, and order direct that way. I have always had excellent results and EDS Today gets a small commission that way. As Bonnie reminded me earlier today " ....then EDS Today DOES get a commission...may not be directly to YOUR pocket but it DOES help other EDSers!!! LOL " Quick fix for leg cramps depends on cause and where. In terms of just getting rid of a cramp when one hits, there are three manual techniques that work. Technical names are (1) Direct Pressure (2) Reciprocal Inhibition and (3) Origin-Insertion Approximation. The first is just what it sounds like, deep, direct pressure right in the middle of the cramping muscle. Using the calf as an example, you would take your fist and simply push the muscle into the leg bone and hold the pressure until the cramp let go. (And for you anatomical purists on the list, yes, I know there is no such muscle as the calf - the " calf " is made up of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Any time we slipped in class and said either calf or thigh it cost us points). Problem with this technique is that it might be in a muscle difficult or impossible to reach easily on yourself, especically while in the midst of an eye-watering cramp. The second method simply means making the muscle perform the opposite action of the cramp. Let's say your back muscles (your extensors) are cramping - just bend forward, arching your back. The extensors can't stay shortened (cramped) when you do this. The third isn't worth describing because it assumes a knowledge of anatomy of kineseology that most people don't have and isn't as effective as either of the first two anyway. These can get rid of a cramp in progress but they don't address the cause of the cramp. They are definitely just symptomatic treatments. In order to stop getting the cramps in the first place, you need to know why you are getting and then treat the cause.
