Here is some information to get everyone started. This diet tackles

ADD/ODD more than IBS.

My family did the elimination diet when my children were 5, 7, 9 and

10. The kids were very cooperative. It helped that I explained the

whys and wherefores before we started and my husband and I followed

the diet, too. Actually my diet was more restrictive because of my

other food problems so the kids thought they had it good. I say this

only as encouragement that the diet can be followed - we've been on

our version since Sep 2002. My best advice is to have substitutes

for things you cannot eat and always read labels.

Food Elimination for ADD/ADHD – A Solid Starting Point

CANNOT Have: • Artificial Colors (also " color added " , " FD&C

color " , " LAKE " or " certified color " )

• Artificial Flavors (also " Vanillin " or " artificial flavoring " )

• Corn Syrup (of any kind, esp. high fructose) to include:

Corn Sweeteners Corn syrup solids

Dextrose Corn malt or malt syrup

Fructose

Glucose

• Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and other high-content " free glutamic

acids "

to include:

Hydrolyzed proteins (of any kind)

Modified starches (of any kind)

Protein isolates (of any kind)

Maltodextrin

Soy sauce or extract

• Benzoates (of any kind) to include:

Sodium Benzoate

Benzoic Acid

• Preservatives to include:

BHT

BHA

TBHQ

EDTA

Polysorbate 80

Calcium Propionate

• Sulfites (of any kind) to include:

Sulfur Dioxide

Sodium and Potassium Metabisulfite

Sodium and Potassium Bisulfite

Sodium Sulfite

• Nitrites or Nitrates

• Margarine or other butter substitutes

• Yellow or flavored cheeses

•2%, 1%, or Skim Milk

CAN Have: • Fresh Fruit

• Fresh Vegetables

•100% Fruit Juices

• Water

• Whole Milk

• White Block (not pre-shredded) Cheeses (cheddar, Monterey jack,

mozzarella, etc.) without color or preservatives added

• Real Butter (without color added)

The restrictions also apply to skin, hair, and/or mouth products

(i.e., toothpastes, shampoos, make-up, etc.). Please remember, these

restrictions only APPEAR limiting – there are all natural and/or

acceptable alternatives to just about anything.
