Narcolepsy and driving

This is about those EDSer's (and others) who have Narcolepsy and want/need

to drive. Narcolepsy is an autonomic nervous system dysfunction. My son,

(18) has it as determined by a sleep latency study. As long as he

is " busy " / " active " / " moving around " , he doesn't fall asleep

uncontrollably/unpredictably. It does happen, however, when he gets very

still and quiet and is at rest. He does have a drivers license with no

restrictions concerning Narcolepsy. I do want to carefully point out, though

that 1) IS on a rather high dosage of Provigil (an Rx stimulant) for

the treatment of Narcolepsy; 2) laws concerning Narcolepsy having a drivers

license may vary from state to state. Check with your Dept. of Public

Safety, or whatever they call it in your state. Similarly, the laws

regarding syncope (passing out from autonomic nervous system

dysfunction....I.e. POTS, Neurocardiogenic Syncope, etc.). This is addressed

in several of Dr. Blair Grubb's published books and articles on syncope. It

does vary widely from state to state. In fact, in Idaho, there is NO

waiting period for driving following syncope! But I digress.; 3) Always,

always, check with your dr. about this concerning your particular condition

and severity of Narcolepsy...it has varying degrees of severity just like

anything else, and some who are afflicted with it have it well medically

controlled and others do not. Preferably, check with your neurologist.
