Guest guest
Hi Lana, I went to the vet with Shanti, not because she appeared to be sick, but she seemed like she wasn't as happy as she used to be. She used to be one of those dogs who was so happy she was jumping around of joy all the time... So I went to a nice female vet at that clinic. She took X-rays of her, and a tiny stone appeared to be in her intestine. The vet wanted to give her a lot of oil and sort of get it flushed out. But then her boss appeared, saying that it was much better and safer to make a little hole on her tummy and get the stone out. I told him that she was the dearest I had in my life, asking him if he was totally sure that that would be what was best for her. He said yes. Later that evening I got her, she was cut from far up on her chest down to her genitals... She was in so much pain, crying (she never did that, she hurt her hip badly and not one cry)... He said he had given her all he could, if I wanted to, he could let her stay there and he would go check on her a couple of times during the night because now she just needed to rest. I asked if it wasn't better that I took her home then, because I would for sure stay up with her. So I layed beside her comforting her all night while she was crying. At around 7 a.m. she finally got some rest. At 9 a.m. we were back, she should get pain relief and antibiotics. She was still bleeding from part of the incision, because he had not sewn her properly, so they had to put in more stitches. Now it was his female colleagues who were at work. I was to fetch her at 3. At around 1:30, I heard her twice here at home. So when I got to the clinic, I was pretty freaked out. My heart was pounding. But the vet came out all cheery, saying that I should get her with me home. I asked her some questions about how to check the gums for shock, I checked her all night and they appeared to be fine but I did not know how they would look if they weren't. She came back with Shanti under one arm and a book under the other. I was shocked when I saw her. I told the vet that something is wrong. She looked at her again and said that maybe it would be best if she stayed a little longer, she would call me. She lifted her lip, and the gums were all white and yellowish... I went out scared out of my wits, don't know how I made it home. I almost went nuts at home. Then I suddenly saw her walk past me in the hallway... I freaked completely... As soon as I managed to pull myself together, I called them, thinking that I should at least be there with her. Then the male vet who operated on her came on the phone saying " But the dog is dead " . He didn't even say he was sorry... He was so obnoxious. Said that if I wanted to see her, or wanted her cremated, I had to let him know within 30 minutes and be there at 8 a.m. to pick out an urn and pay for it. That was it... Later I sat there and I just knew... I have never been more sure of anything in my whole life... He spilled contents of her intestine in her belly... I have talked to other vets afterwards, and they say that is probably what he did. And not sewing properly may have played a role too. But she was completely fine all night and she was fine when I brought her in in the morning. When I got there the next morning to pick an urn, the female from the day before was there. She was shocked that i was there at that time, and asked me why. She seemed so shocked over what he had said to me. Maybe he was afraid that I would make a scene or something, so he didn't want me there when they normally opened for the public at 9? The female vet was so sorry. She took me into a room and told her that she had never felt so bad before, that this should not have happened etc. She did not go into details, but I could tell that her and the other female vet there, really felt bad for what had happened. Obviously she got into cardiac arrest just after I left, but they managed to bring her back. They sent for the boss and they opened her, only to find out that she was septic and organs were too damaged already. She said that they had done all that was in their power then to save her, but it was too late, and she did die at the time when I saw her here at home. I have never experienced anything like that before... But now it feels like she came by to say bye-bye... I loved her so much... Still do... She was not " just a dog " as some people think about pets, that is for sure... She was family, and she meant so much to me... She only got to be 6 years old... I did not know what to do... I couldn't sleep and felt worse than I ever did in my whole life... I started calling around, trying to find Shanti's breeder, but she was gone. Found out later that she moved to Spain... But finally I got in contact with Peanut's breeder. She didn't have any puppies, and did not know about anybody who had any. People are on 2-3 year long waiting lists to get a Yorkie here... I was afraid that I might be forced to get another breed, even if it felt right to get a Yorkie. After talking to her breeder for a long while, she suddenly let out a big sigh and said " I think I will help you out " ... She had kept Peanut for showing her, because she is so pretty. But she let me buy her. She was 8 months old at the time, but acted like a little puppy, she had lived such a protected life with her mom, the other dogs in the house, a cat and the breeder. She had never had a leash on or gone for a walk, had just been out in the back yard. You should have seen her, she was so funny, with that wobbly head and all. Smelling the sweet puppy smell. I was really lucky that the breeder was going to Bergen to visit her daughter the next weekend, so I managed to get a plane ticket there. I met her at the airport and Peanut and I went on the next plane home. She sat in my jacket all the way, lucky for her, because she did not like that tiny propeller plane one bit (me neither to be honest)... But it was a quick flight. She soon became mom's girl, sleeping in my bed, going with me to work and everything. You have to search a lot for a better socialized little Yorkie girl than her. She's been with me everywhere. She is home when I am at work now, but that is the only thing she is afraid of. She does not like to be alone at home, but she is doing a lot better with it now, she is not scared anymore, but lets you know she is not happy about it. Like your Bucky, Peanut is smart. Shanti was even smarter, but then again Peanut is still young and learning every day. Peanut was really easy to house train, but I do know many have trouble with that with Yorkies. I trained her to pee on what you call puppy pads over there too. You can't get puppy pads here, only those huge diapers meant for under a person's butt in the bed. So I get those, " Depends " (called Tena here though). Works like a charm, she learned to go on them in a day or two. I started with it when it started getting cold this fall, she had such a tough time, she got so cold - probably because of her colitis (humans having it does get cold easily). Also it is nice for me when my mornings aren't easy... Now she has a huge wardrobe of comfy, cute and warm clothing though, so snow is cool as long as she can keep moving. She loves to go out exploring. She can drag me around for two hours (not easy for me in the cold though, brrrr). She can't stand still for a second. I tried different boots for her too, but that is more difficult. I sew one for her when she hurt her paw, and after trying out different designs, I found one that worked well. My fingers are so painful though, so I haven't been up to sewing 4. Now I found a type with the same sole that I figured out myself though, so now she is getting the same cute boots that Paris Hilton's dog Tinkerbell wears... I got such a good price from a seller on eBay, so she is even getting two pairs. They take up to $110 for a " dog pair " in shops, which is insane. I got two pairs for $70, so I just had to get them for her... She'll look so cute. Take a look at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem & item=2381073589 & category=46297 I have to ask you, what is a cock-a-poo? A mix of a cocker spaniel and a poodle? Sounds really interesting... Do you have a picture??? I would love to see Bucky!!! I am totally nuts about Yorkies. I think it is the terrier personality which I love so much, combined with those small and cute doggies. Also the size is perfect for me, easy to lift and take with me everywhere. Shanti used to pull my manual wheelchair up to 10 mph outside here (flat ground)... people got such a kick out of seeing that. Sometimes they would joke about if she was a pulling dog, since I keep the leash fastened to a belt around my waist to have my hands free. But then I asked her to pull and they saw her really do it, they were so shocked... She weighed around 5 lbs. Peanut is 4.5 lbs and this summer I got stuck in the sand on the playground outside here. I asked her to pull and she pulled well enough to make me able to get out of the sand again. I never use a collar though, just good harnesses. It was Shanti who started it all, she started pulling, even if I didn't want her to. I could not stop her. She almost choked herself, so I just had to get her a good harness... She seemed to get such a kick out of it, she was so excited... They are funny... This got really long. I am so bad... I do that all the time... I don't seem to be able to write short mails...I was thinking of having a little nap... I think I'll get to it... Aase Marit >I used to have a Yorkie! Her name was Sasha, and I had to put her to >sleep because her intestine was kinked, and they couldn't promise >she'd be OK even with surgery - and I was pregnant at the time, and >we had hardly any money. They're darling dogs, but mine was never >completely housebroken - or she got even with us, I'm not sure which! >LOL! What did the vet do/not do with your other Yorkie! I would be >hoppin mad also! I LOVE dogs! I have a white cock-a-poo now, named >Bucky. He's very smart, and cute - I love him!
