MD's are not too terribly fond of referring to a DO but will send

you to a Chiro in a heart beat... Not quite sure what is up with

that except it is hard for MD's to swallow the fact that DO's are

REAL doctors!

--------

What's up with that?

Well, in large measure, what's up is that a few years ago the

American Chiropractic Association sued the American Medical

Association for restraint of trade under the anti-trust laws ... and

won. Since the anti-trust laws have treble damage awards, the AMA

could have been bankrupted and put out of business had the

Chiropractic Association chosen to do so. They did not. What they

asked for, and got, was for the AMA to back off with all the cheap

shots and to start having their members refer to chiros where

appropriate. Might be hard to believe, but true. I was following

the case very closely at the time.

My personal experience and preference has always been to have a DO

as a primary care provider whenever possible because in those

locations where I have had the choice, the DO had all the same

medical training and prescription writing capability as an MD but

could also do spinal manipulations as well.

Bottom line on all of it, however, still gets back to the money

trail and the standard of care laws. The standard of care laws and

the definitions of what constitute " practicing medicine " are written

and controlled by the allopaths (the MDs). There has been an on-

going battle in this country from the late 1800's until the present

day. MDs would love nothing better than to put all of their

competition out of business. It has NOTHING to do with patients

getting the best possible care and treatment. It has EVERYTHING to

do with greed. If anyone wants to challenge me on this, I would be

more than happy to provide some readings on the history of medicine

in the United States.
