Guest guest
The following is an article I wrote to refute snopes.com claim that the idea that the toxicity of aspartame/nutrasweet is a hoax: Here are the ''reputable'' sources given by snopes: >>>>On the pro-aspartame side, we have a rebuttal to this document from the folks at NutraSweet (Monsanto's brand name for aspartame). <<<< Well duh, they are selling aspartame so what do you expect? >>>>For the opposition, we have a collection of articles at the web site of Aspartame Toxicity Information Center. (Keep in mind that most of the material available through this site contains no information about its source and/or does not derive from peer-reviewed scientific journals.) <<<< There is a lot of MEDICAL literature about this. More later in this message. >>>>And finally, you can reference scholarly, peer-reviewed articles about aspartame through Medline. <<<< Not much in the way has been done with double blind studies at all and all financed BY NUTRASWEET. Another duh. Now, let's look at what the pro nutrasweet site says about aspartame - here I will show you that THEY ADMIT it's a poison: 1. They say yes, aspartame does contain methyl, a neurotoxin but in smaller quantities than found in fruit juice. Partially true. It is true that there is more methyl in fruit juice but it also contains EQUAL quantities of ''ethyl'' which neutralizes the neurotoxic effects of methyl. Without ethyl, methyl is known by another name. Wood alcohol. 2. They admit that it contains amounts of formaldehyde (it's stored at room temperature so by the time you get it, it's got the formaldehyde in it) but claim that the formaldehyde is in such small amounts that it ''won't hurt you''. A. Would you take ''small amounts of arsenic'' if it were a sweetener? B. In a study published in the JAMA in 2001, they showed that formaldehyde was so dangerous that even inhaling the fumes can be deadly. So certainly one gets SMALLER amounts inhaling fumes than drinking it, hello? C. There is some evidence that formaldehyde collects in the tissues (see the study published in the JAMA on this) so small amounts can add up. By the way, any kid can do the 'formaldehyde test'' Just leave a can of diet pop out for a couple of hours then test for formaldehyde. Nothing like seeing to believe. Would you drink embalming fluid also? Snopes entire ''proof'' of the falsity of the claims against aspartame is: 1. the site SELLING nutrasweet which as you can see above is EASILY rebutted 2. Discounting Betty i. Betty tends to blame all the illness of the world on aspartame and of course I don't agree. But I've done quite a bit of research on it myself, separately from her and the evidence was out there even before she got on the band wagon. Here's what I found: 1. A case of a woman who logged on my bulletin board in 1984 who was diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis and was in a wheelchair. Her doctor told her to stop drinking diet pop and a year later, her MS had ''miraculously'' disappeared. 2. My boss in one contracting job had peripheral neuropathy. He was fit, exercised daily, was at his ideal weight, ate a healthy diet and had NO RISK factors for this. He went to doctors, even the Mayo Clinic and no one could figure out why he had this. I found one possibility. He drank a few cans of diet pop daily. I told him about my suspicions about aspartame and he wanted proof. I downloaded a 15 megabyte file of complaints which the FDA had amassed - this product has raised the MOST complaints of anything else! He read through the file and stopped drinking diet pop. He had damage to his nerves but the rapidly progressing neuropathy immediately stopped progressing and over the years it has improved. 3. Read the history of how it was FDA approved. It caused cancer in the rat studies and the scientific committee all voted AGAINST approval and the FDA concurred but after a meeting with Monsanto, they, in a landmark decision decided to approve it, AGAINST The advisement of their scientific committee. The head of the FDA retired and feels bad about the approval and has allied with the anti movement. DO THE HOMEWORK. Do not blindly believe one side or the other. Snopes is a fairly good source but everything should be read with a critical eye. Aspartame is not legal in many other countries. My feelings are and always WERE that Monsanto cannot afford to admit it is dangerous or the lawsuits would be many so they will slowly replace it with something else. This is quietly happening with Splenda which is a sugar molecule tightly woven together with ammonia. I don't think it's all that safe either as it also caused cancer in the rat studies but anything is probably safer than aspartame. 10 years from now, I suspect aspartame will have disappeared from the scene. However, Monsanto may not be able to avoid the lawsuits - i has a whopping large class action suit going with hundreds of complainants and several physicians and neurologists joining her.
