Jerri,

I had a roux-en-y gastric bypass in Dec 01. I was the first patient with lupus that my surgeon had done the weight loss surgery (wls) on. He made me have an echocardiogram to make sure the valves of my heart were okay and he made me get a letter from my rheumatologist to let him know that there wasn't anything that I had going on with my lupus that would complicate my recovery from the wls. My pcp talked with the rheumatologist and he told the pcp that sometimes with lupus you can have difficulty healing after surgery. If I remember right, he said something about vasculitis causing additional problems and complications, especially with abdominal surgeries. My echocardiogram was normal and the rheumy okayed the wls with no problem. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made and I would do again tomorrow. Having said that, please keep in mind that it is major surgery. In addition to being major surgery, you lose weight VERY rapidly in the beginning, which is hard on the body. As we all know, any stress can bring on a lupus flare. In my case, I don't think the wls caused any problems with my lupus and in fact, I believe it has made a lot of things better. Getting the weight off certainly helped with my joint, back, and foot pain.

www.obesityhelp.com is a very informative web site if you are interested in wls.

Let me know if you have other questions that I can help you with.
