Guest guest Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Hi, Have you had your daughter checked (during those bruise times) for prothrombin time to see if there is a coagulation problem going on? --Martha (mom to Chrissy IgA deficiency) Quote
Guest guest Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Hi Christy~~ Does your son happen to take Depakote? I know that can cause low platelets which shows up as bruising. There may be other meds which do the same thing. If he doesn't take Depakote, you may want to call your pharmacist and ask if any of the meds he takes can cause low platelets~~ Belinda Gray Lacey's mom, (14, CdLS, and IgG deficiency) Pittsburg, CA Quote

I used to wonder if people would think we BEAT because she had so many bruises. Bruises from falling, bruises from getting in and out of high chairs, exersaucers, etc. She had big green bruises all the way across her forehead! The joint is not very solid until the child is much older, I think maybe even as old as 8. That's why you're not supposed to " swing " them by their hands for fun or pick them up holding anything lower than the elbow. Many people don't know this though. Tell your husband not to feel bad! About the bruising, to ease your mind you could ask for a finger stick to check her platelets when she's in the middle of a particularly bruisy period. Sorry you've had such a bad experience. Have you thought of a new church?? I wouldn't go back, either. Did you try to explain to this pastor and his wife? I am not a man basher, but men in particular seem to have trouble understanding immune deficiencies. They can be in a lot of denial over the situation. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 A couple of mths ago our pastor hinted that he might turn us in to the DHS because Jonathon was going back and forth to the doctor so much then. Needless to say we haven't been back to that church. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Virginia, This sort of thing makes me so angry! People who don't understand something are so quick to form judgments instead of taking time to get informed. Definitely I wouldn't go back to that church again, but I would take steps to find another church home that would be more understanding about your situation and offer prayer/guidance/support right now. My church was so sweet to us when we had to take Autumn to National Jewish. We saved for two months, but still came up short for finances. They gave us $700 to make the trip! We were so blessed with their generosity. Good luck to you! Ray, mother to Tabitha (age 7), Autumn, age 5 (IgG def., asthma, chronic sinusitis, and allergies), and Duncan (19 months Quote
Guest guest Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 , Autumn bruises at the drop of a hat. It could be a bruise from where someone held onto her arm too tight for a split second, or falling down outside on the jungle gym. . .doesn't really matter. Autumn's bruises last, on average, about six weeks. Most people I've talked to say 2-3 weeks for a bad bruise. Tabby heals the fastest in my house. Usually in a week or so, her bruise is gone. (I say that & she has a bruise on her leg where Duncan whacked her really hard with a piece of pipe & it's been there for about 3 weeks now -- almost gone). Duncan is second in line with his bruises healing in about 3 weeks. Autumn also takes forever to heal scratches and scrapes. I think it is related to her PID and so does her ped. Since she's not a candidate for IVIG, we're stuck with the slow healing process. When she gets rocephin shots, the bruises can last for 2 months, no matter how still she is when she gets the shot. Guest guest Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 I know this might sound kind a crazy to someone who's child doesn't get injured at lot, but it made a lot of sense to me. My dear friend has a 2yo that had already had 3 sets of stitches and a broken tooth and a dislocated shoulder. The accidents had happened at daycare, at home with mom and at a children's museum with dad. They had 3 ER visits for injuries in 5 months! My friend was tired of explaining all the bruising and truly scared that one day their ER visit would become a nightmare with CPS alleging abuse. SO... she took her dd to her pediatrician to investigate whether her dd has an anomaly in how she walked or an equilibrium problem. Now, my friend KNEW that her dd didn't have any such problem, but she wanted her family ped to have documentation that the parents were concerned about their dd's clumsiness LONG before CPS got involved. I thought it was a great idea to prevent future problems. You could make sure that every time you see your ped that you mention that your child really bruises easily or seems clumsy to get it on record. Just an idea! Pam Re: Lots of bruises Hello Prior to our second IVIG infusion(ever), Calvin took a big bump on his forehead. I could go into the details, but I won't except to say it was a simple childhood fall. The bruise seemed to stay there forever, and kind of spread and turned colors. It looked a bit ugly. Well, the infusion doc asked about it at his second infusion(our first visit with him) and I think he wondered about us for a while:). Quote

We did lots of activities all morning... usually she acts up the most when she's bored but she had no excuse today. I never leave the two of them alone, don't worry about that. Can't wait until Kate's old enough to fight back! Don't know if I reported on this URI has, boy what a NASTY cough. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Our son was having rashes on his legs, similar to what you describe, but he was scratching them a lot. We read that this may be due to vitamin A overdoze and calculated his vitamin A intake. Fair enough, we were at about 10,000 IU/day, while McCandless recommends 2,500- 5,000 IU (page 121 in the 2nd edition of her book). We reduced his Cod Liver Oil and the rashes disappeared. I don't know if this has any relation to your son's problem as you clearly do not see scratching, but calculating his vitamin A intake will cause no harm. > Every single day I am seeing bruises on my sons legs. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 How old is he? My son used to have some bruises on his shins because of climbing stairs when he was 2 yo. At each step, his shin would bump into the upper step. It took me a long time to figure it out! He also got some from kicking in his high chair. > Every single day I am seeing bruises on my sons legs. Little ones about the > size of a dime. Three to four on each legs every day. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Kids are kids. They bark the shins none the same even if we don't see it or they cry to alert us. Our son gets his fair share. We are using Epsom Salts baths and if that doesn't heal them we use a little magnesium sulfate cream from Kirkman's on them. It helps them go away pretty fast. HTH [ ] Lots of Bruises Every single day I am seeing bruises on my sons legs. Little ones about the size of a dime. Three to four on each legs every day. Now they are even bigger and more abundant. I never see him do anything to cause these bruises. At least not the ones on his legs. They are all on the front of his legs around the shin area. He bumps his head, falls on his arms, these things don't seem to cause the bruises. So I am wondering if something else could be causing these bruises on his legs. Does anyone have a similar experience? Any thoughts? Thanks for the help. Mel ======================================================= Quote
Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I have always had the problem of bruising like this. As a child my mother worried people would think I was abused. Something as light as a small cat walking across my legs would cause bruises as you describe. Regular use of vitamin C and a probiotic has stopped this. He said increase vitamin C, which worked for me. Dana Quote
Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 My 4 yr. old son always has bruised on his shins also. I read that increasing vit. C can help. So I recently started giving him this. I have also read that supplementing vit. K can help with this. So if I don't notice improvement with vit. c I will try vit. K. > Every single day I am seeing bruises on my sons legs. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Every single day I am seeing bruises on my sons legs. Nutritional deficiencies, esp. vitamin C cause easy bruising. Can also be a sign of underlying disease or can be a side effect of some medicines. What supplements/medicines is he taking and how much?. Try giving him some vitamin C and see if he gets better. Abby Quote
Guest guest Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Lots of replies to my question about all the bruises, I appreciate that. First off, my son is only 29 months old. I can pretty much tell if he bumps into things. That is part of the mystery. I see him bump into things on other parts of his body, but not his shins. The other areas don't seem to get the bruises. Thanks Andy for the green leafy vegetable idea, I will try that. Right now he gets Vit C, probiotics, Q-10 and more. We have not tried vitamin K yet. In fact, I don't even know where to get it. I know it is not eczema. He had that before and we pretty much resolved that problem. This is much different. I was giving him Epson salt baths, but it didn't seem to make a difference. One entire carton per bath..... Quote
