I think that technically, scientifically the jury is still out on

gluten in breast milk issue. However, my personal experience is

that YES it is. At 3 months old my collicky screaming little girl

began to have blood in her stools and lost weight like crazy. I was

exclusively breastfeeding at the time. My pediatrician had me go on

an emimination type diet to see if there was something I was eating

that was causing the problem. For a couple of days I only ate rice

and then added things in every couple of days. As soon as I added

wheat back the bleeding began again. From there on out she

consistently would bleed if I ate anything with wheat. We thought

it must be a wheat allergy. We didn't zero in on celiac until after

she was a year old and still not growing the way she should.

Because we thought it was wheat we had not eliminated barley or rye

from her diet either. She was getting just enough of those things

to cause damage, but not enough to cause the bleeding that she had

when she was younger. We finally got a biopsy and confimed celiac,

removed the offending items and she is doing GREAT!. Our pediatric

gastro told me that the medical profession was undecided as to if

gluten is passed through breastmilk, but that he felt in my

duaghter's case the evidence was so strong that he would strongly

encourage me to follow- a gluten free diet if I have any more

children and choose to breastfeed them. I asked about the cow thing

and got the same answer, something about the 2 stomachs, etc...I

don't know? HTH
