I tried a new online dictionary for the male version of this bird and

it says this:

(Tiur) apercaillie, capercailzie, wood grouse

(Tiurleik = the mating game I was mentioning)

capercailzie mating game

I tried searching for the female name of this bird, but it came up

with nothing. The word above " Tiur " , is for the male bird. They look

so beautiful when they " play " (mating game), with their tail spread

out as a fan... As with most birds, the male is more colorful than

the female one. She has brownish colors. The male is black with

different other colors. For a picture of the two, look at

visits here, is like the brownish one to the right. But the picture

does not do them justice, they are really big... (like a turkey, I

guess) The picture is from a museum, the two are stuffed... For a

I remember two friends of mine and their brother often went on

" Tiurleik " (mating game) with their dad when we were kids. That

involves staying out in the woods in a tent, at the edge of a place

you know they often play. You have to hide the tent and then lay

really still and peek out of the tent when they play. I have never

experienced it myself, but they say it is fantastic.

A similar bird is called " Orrhoene " (male: " Orrhane " ), but I think

this one is slightly smaller. The dictionary came up with this for

that one:

grey hen, heath hen

On my way looking for pictures, I found this picture which is worth

taking a look if you would like to see a piece of beautiful Norwegian

and find the links " Forrige " (previous) and " neste " (next) and take a

look for some wonderful pictures. The next one is of a beautiful wild

cat we have here called a " Gaupe " . The size is about as a big dog...

For May 2002 there is a beautiful picture of a sea eagle... Just keep

hitting " Neste " . For March 2000 is also a King Eagle... For April

2000 a playing Tiur (on snow)... From there was a link to a mating

Unfortunately the text is in Norwegian only. Some of what he

describes, is about some stupid people who watched openly, without

being in hiding, some moved and destroyed the rest of the mating

game... He recommends that people build a hut made of branches of

needle trees and cover the opening with old brown fabric sacks... Or

using a green tent slightly hidden by a tree... He says that they

start playing at around April 20, and if they don't succeed they have

another go in May... So it is a bit later than I remembered. But

maybe they play a bit earlier here in the south...
