Hmmm.  The absence of heart sounds is a pretty good indicator that life, as we

know it, has ceased.  This was known even to those who practiced in the days

before cardiac monitors, so I am told.  Of course, listening for heart sounds is

an advanced technique requiring extensive training, available only to the select

few.  This may be too much for some to master.

Agree. Blunt trauma has almost no chance of resuscitation. Many services call on

blunt trauma patients found to be pulseless and apneic. One could also document

the absence of an apical pulse as a finding without the strip being run.

" In this consecutive series of trauma victims who suffered cardiac arrest,

overall survival was only 4%, and there were no survivors among patients who

lost vital signs and required CPR prior to arrival at the hospital. "
