Guest guest
Hello all:) I am getting ready to have Kris move into a bigger shoe size and was wondering before we purchase another pair, if anyone has a pair that are a size 5 that they no longer need? Here in Hawaii, the shoes cost way more then what you guys are paying. they run about $400,00 or so. I think that's because of shipping? Who knows, but before I go in to have them get me another pair, I thought I should ask here before we pay that price. After paying for Kris to go into OR (3 times) for his re-casting, we are a little tight on funds (cost came out to be about 18,000.00, ins. covered most, but we have to pay about 4,000.00 or so, that is just the est. cost.). But if there are none we will find a way as we have all this time:) His feet are doing fine, but the frt toe's are turning in again, because he has this habit of curling the big toe's under all the time! Please let me know, and paying for shipping or anything else is not a problem. Still cheaper then getting the shoes here:) He is wearing the DBB shoes that look just like with the adj. red bar and the shoes have straps and laces exactly the same as pictures:) He is now in a size 4? but his toes are hanging out the frt already, and he has been getting fussy and waking up at nights. I am thinking it's because he is not comfortable with the shoes. He has not complained about them or woke up at nights for a very long time. The bar is adj. to his shoulder length, and can not be moved any more, it has reached it's limit. There is a mom here that will be needing these shoes for her son soon, and was going to donate them to her, because they too have a hard time paying for shoes:) It feels so good to know your helping a mom this way:) anyhow, please let me know:) I would much appreciate it:) And put them to good use. also will pass them on to any needed mother when we are outgrowing these also:)! My doctor has asked me to be in charge of putting together a support group here for moms & dads:) that are just starting out. there is no place for them to turn to or anyone to talk to about there everyday challenges. I have been thinking this would be a great way to give back, and told him I would try and help if I could. Are there any support groups out there? He will also spend time to come and talk to and answer any questions there might be. It would help him a lot due to the calls on things that are not medically related, and they just do not know where else to turn:) Sorry so long:) Aloha Carole Mom to Kristopher 6-11-02 Bilateral CF Ponseti since 7 weeks casted twice, and still pressing on!!! Guest guest
Carole, I thought Kris was being seen at Shriners, at least partially. If so, can't they get shoes for you? I'd send you ours, but they're too small. I have some 2.5's and soon some 3's, her feet grow fast! I wonder if someone here can't get a pair for the $60 or whatever it costs normally and ship them to you. They weigh a whole 1.5#. whoopie ding dong... don't tell me it costs $300 to ship them to HI. It sounds like the orthotics shop is making a @#$%^ pot of $ on these. That's horrible anyone would make you pay so much. Too bad you can't order directly from Markell, is that the only place you can get them there? There's got to be some other solution... >Kori Mama of Kenton 6/98 Merek 3/00 Darbi 3/03 - Rt. Guest guest
Hi Carole, glad to hear things are going well with you guys! About Kris rolling his toes under, it could be due to the boots being too small for him! Anyway, I would suggest that if his toes are hanging over the edge of the size 4's, you might want to consider getting a size 6 next so that he'll have some growing room in them. We normally go up 2 sizes at a time here (from 0's to 2's and now in 4's). About the cost of the boots, I second Cori's suggestion of trying to get them directly from Jay Markell. Go to his website and print out the sizing chart so that you can measure Kris' feet and get the appropriate size. Here is the info for Markell: M.J. Markell Shoe Co., Inc. Device: Tarso Medius straight last shoes, Style #1644 or #2644 Address: 504 Saw Mill River Rd., Yonkers, NY 10701 Phone: Fax: Web: www.markellshoe.com Also, if you check the Foot Abduction Orthosis Setup Document (in the files section here), you can follow the instructions for measuring Kris' feet. Here is what that doc says: " Shoe size: Length from heel to longest toe plus ½ " -3/4 " i. Measure shoe from inside heel to very end of the shoe sole " I hope this helps! Guest guest
I'm sure our local supplier of shoes here in Arlington, Virginia would send you a $60 pair of shoes to Hawaii. I asked him previously about sending shoes to people, and he said sure! He couldn't believe that anyone was charging more than what he was charging. He really felt that those suppliers were taking advantage of the customers, especially if the insurance company wasn't paying for the shoes. Contact Doc Friedman at publicshoe@.... They've been in business at least 30 years. He was the one who educated us on how the shoes and bar worked. I did notice that the newer model shoes were a few dollars more, but I also think as the shoes got bigger, the price went up a few dollars. Her first pair of 000s were about $55. I think I paid $65 for the size 8s... Since we will hopefully be needing the shoes again if we're able to successfully adopt a child with clubfoot, I need to hang on to ours for the time being, otherwise I would gladly send them to you... Hope this helps.
