Somebody wrote about usig L-Carnosine to help alleviate some

mental/emotional symptoms. Is this something different thatn L-Caritine, or

was there just a typographical error.

No, not a typo, they are two different compounds. (amino acids)

Some people do find Carnosine helpful for mental symptoms.

Carnitine is an amino acid that acts as a shuttle for fatty acids to

go into the mitochondria and get burned. So, you use it for energy.

The acetyl-L-carnitine form seems to make it into the brain easier,

and is worth a try for general mental clarity.

I discovered carnitine after I ground to a halt with groaning muscles

after 1 week on the Atkins induction diet. I was used to burning

sugars (not allergic to sugar!--it didn't make me feel bad) and

couldn't convert to burning fats. I took the dose I found on the

Merck Manual website (read about the congenital defect---very

interesting) which is pretty high (read: expensive!) and never felt

so fresh within 24 hrs.

Carnosine helped one of my kids with language and behaviors.

Carnitine helps with low muscle tone issues for many kids.

May I ask for the specific website to the Merck manual. Also, what do I look

under when I get there? My husband and I are doing the Atkins and my calves are

killing me. My husband too. My son's lab work and genetic test all called for

Carnitine and we give it to him. Is it a family problem?

Go to the Merck website: www.merck.com

Click on Merck Manuals, that brings up a page with several options;

you want to search the one for " Health Care Professionals " , not the

home edition or the aging edition. Or the veterinary one either for

that matter.

Enter carnitine in the search engine and start reading selections. If

I remember correctly, I picked my dose from the section on

complication of kidney dialysis. Seems carnitine gets washed out. I

was taking 2 grams 4 times a day for awhile--that worked out to

15mgper pound or so.

Yes, there is some implication there that problems with carnitine

metabolism have a herditary component. And there is a condition of

newborns lacking the enzyme to make ANY called limp baby or ragdoll

or something.

Since that renal washout condition exists, I just figured that I'd

washed what I had out with years of diet soda, plus reduced eating of

quality meats, plus downregulating my ability to make it by always

having carbs on board. And I had my unknown (at the time) mercury

problem which clogs up you mitochondrial metabolism as well. Genetics

usually gets the blame from lazy MDs, but there is much more going on

than that.
