Dear Jen,

Everyone is different when it comes to surgery, as with so many other

things :-) You have to weigh the possible risks against the possible benefits,

again as with so many other things.

The best thing to do is get informed. First looks at yourself. What are

your special risks if any? Do you have to worry about vien ruptures and things

along that line? If so then you may feel that surgery for you should only be in

case of emergency. If you have no special bleeding problems to worry about or

other conditions that could make surgery life threatening then you need to look

at other things that could make surgery a problem.

For instance, do you have problems with the skin healing or are you prone

to infections? Either of these along with other things can be addressed with the

doc ahead of time. Speak to them of your concerns and make sure that if you do

go ahead with a surgery that they will have a game plan in place to deal with

any of these issues.

I happen to dehydrate VERY quickly (maybe thats why I drink over a gallon

of water a day?) Hence any procedure where I can not drink from midnight the

night before has to be scheduled early to keep my blood pressure from dropping

too low.

You have to weigh your own possible risks against your own possible gains

but you can not do that until you have the information. I always use the

" quality of life " scale. Find out what the worst thing is that could happen to

the shoulder if it has surgery then ask yourself - if that happened would it

really make my quality of life much worse than it is now? Can I continue on with

the quality of life I currently have without taking this risk?

Also just as important as what is the worst that could happen if you have

the surgery you have to look at what the worst is that could happen if you don't

have it! How much damage can happen to the area if I just let it go?

Any and all surgery is a risk. Only you can determine if you are willing to

take that risk.

Best of luck!
