Guest guest
I thought that when your eardrum breaks, the pain goes away. Am I wrong? I am waiting to call the ear dr when he gets in this morning.
Guest guest
It has been our experience that pain is relieved once the drum breaks. Often hearing decreases significantly and there is visible drainage from the ear. My kids both had multiple ear infections when they were little. C. Guest guest
Thanks Bonnie, Like I said earlier, I though if your eardrum bursts, the pain goes away. But, it's a really weird thing happening. It started in her left ear on friday night, which I took her to the dr for. (actually the er cause it was midnight). Not cold symptoms or fever or anything. They gave her amoxicillan and prcocet. And a shot of torodahl. Then, on Sunday night, it went to her right ear. I took her back to the er, cause it was 2:30 in the morning. They gave her a shot of dilaudid. and, augmentin and vicodin, and some drops called antipyrine/benzocaine. The dr said was the 4th patient that day with ear pain, and no cold symptoms. She was thinking it must be some bacteria. She said they were all unsure as to why all these people are getting this without the cold symptoms. She said it's very unusual. She's been sleeping a lot (probably from the meds), but when she wakes up, her ear hurts. Last night, at about 2:30am she woke up in intense pain. The worst pain has allways been in the middle of the night. I gave her a vicodin, the ear drops, and a flexril (her neck was hurting too). She got in bed with me and dad, and finally went to sleep after about an hour of me rubbing and sctarching her back. This pain is so intense. She has had swimmers ear many times. Now, that hurts, but nothing compaired to this. She was complaining that the back of her ear hurt, and a couple teeth. I didn't see any swelling by her aching teeth. And, that wouldn't explain why it started in the other ear. And, a terrible headach, and pain all along her jaw too. I know it hurts your whole face when you have an infection. I didn't even think to give her a decongestant, cause she wasn't stuffed up. But, I will, cause she must have some fluid behing the ear. They couldn't really see, because of all the wax, and they didn't want to go digging around in there to get it out. She wouldn't let them anyway. She does have one of those memory foam pillows to keep her neck supported, but not a wedge. I'll try that too. I haven't noticed anything draining from either ear. Except for what's left of the drops that sort of comes out. Oh, I hate this. I made the mistake of looking on the internet in the middle of the night. Saw something about how the bone can get infected, and it can go into the brain. I shouldn't have done that! haha I'll let you know what happens today with the ear dr. I'll ask him about checking the tube. I'm gonna print out your e-mail so I don't forget. Thanks so much. So, augmentin isn't really that strong? I thought it was. Guest guest
That's what I thought. I haven't noticed any drainage - just what's left of the ear drops. She does have decreased hearing. Well, I'll just take her back to the dr. Thanks!

Guest guest
you can rupture the ear drub. It sounds like she needs a much stronger antibiotic than Augmentin.... My usually gets a cephlosporin type of med - usually Ceftin and there is a generic for it which is CHEAP!!! She be experiencing a middle ear infection which would account for the ear pressure/pain AND a ear canal infection (commonly known as Swimmers Ear) for which she would need separate drops that go in the canal. Has she been taking a decongestant to help dry up the fluid in her middle ear??? There is also a very very small muscle in the middle ear, called the Stapdeius muscle that could be spasming and causing pain. I get this every so often too. She could also be having TMJ pain. I hope she gets some relief today from the ENT!!! Let me know what happens. Cuz, when her pain is finally reduced, YOUR pain and suffering will too! It's hard to see our precious children sick and in pain!! And to answer your question about can your infection change? Yeppers... I had a dooozy of an infection when was little and it went from a sinus infection to double ear infection. I had to have my antibiotics changed THREE times because there were different organisms causing the infection. The MD was perplexed that I had to have changes in meds! My has had this happen, mostly because the idiot MD (usually a fill in MD) didn't give a strong enough antibiotic!!! BTW, do you have a wedge pillow for to sleep on, to raise her head and shoulders up? This will help the fluid drain better out of the ears because of gravity. A question to ask the ENT - if he takes and Xray of her sinuses....is this: Are her estachian tubes in a NORMAL adult position or are they still parallel with her middle ear? In infants, the head is so small that the middle ear and Eustachian tubes are parallel which is one reason why babies/infants get lots of ear infections because they are on their backs a lot. As we grow and the head enlarges, the location/ratio of the middle ear and Eustachian tubes changes. If you want a photo of a baby and adult, I can dig some up and either email them to you or put them at CEDA for reference. If your MD wants to know how you got this info....tell him you have a Speech Therapy friend who also has EDS! IF need be, print out my email and take it with!! Guest guest
, could have an infection called mastoiditis, it's an infection of the mastoid process of the skull located right behind the ear. It is usually caused by an ear infection that has spread to that area. They usually do a CT scan to confirm this, if that is what it is. Good luck! Sincerely, S. 's ear > Ok, something is NOT right. was put on antibiotic on friday night. Then she had togo back cause her other ear started hurting too. And really bad. So they gave her a different antibiotic. > Every night, she wakes up with intense pain. Last night, she was up for half the night just crying and crying. I gave her the meds, had her take a hot shower, and got in bed with her. She finaly got to sleep when the meds took effect. > > Now, shouldnt' she be feeling better by now? Something tells me this isn't a regular ear infection. She says it hurts behind and below her ear, as well as in what she described as the canal. She isn't hearing well out of the worst ear. > > I gotta take her to an ear dr first thing this morning. I've never know an ear infection to hurt this bad for this long. She's on augmentin, which is pretty strong (and expensive!). She's had percocet, tylenol codeine, and vicodin, along with a muscle relaxer, cause her neck is stiff and sore. (Not all at the same time!) > > Can you get an ear infection that doesn't respond to antibiotics? Do you know what they do for that? I suppose that would mean it's a bacteria instead of a virus? > I hope it's not something really bad. Guest guest
Hi, a couple months ago, she got an infection outside her ear, and it was swollen behind her ear. Her ear was all red and swollen. She took antibiotics, and it seemed to clear up. I forget what they called it. I wonder if the infection never did fully clear up, and this is from that. I thought it was from wearing an earing that wasn't gold, as she is very sensitive to cheap earings. I'll talk to the dr today about that. Thanks,

Guest guest
Like I said, she could have other infections going on. Was there pus and/or blood on her pillow? These are signs that the ear drum has ruptured/broken Let me know Re: Re: 's ear I thought that when your eardrum breaks, the pain goes away. Am I wrong? Guest guest
I had a really bad ear infections last summer. I was driving across the country coming home from vacation so I really couldn't go to the doc until I got back, 2 days later. The ear pain was really bad, then it was just aching. I did have some blood come from my ear and went I made it to my doc, it had burst. But the hole was small & it healed up. I was given Zithromax. I think my son passes them on to me since I haven't had them since I was a kid. But now I usually get ear infections every year. This started about 3 years ago. I hope feels better soon.
