Hi Crystal,

I appreciate your honesty here - this may be a difficult issue that many

face and can't cope with, perhaps this might strike a chord and generate

some helpful dialogue.

Crystal,

Sorry so late in replying but have not been on most of the weekend. What you

described in your email is not a real abnormal, or unnatural reaction to

chronic illness or no illness for that matter. Children are always looking for

ways to get attention no matter what the avenue of getting it is. You should

not feel so " bad " about using this ploy when you were a child. I bet if you

surveyed a group of children with EDS they would confess to incidents like this

where they use their EDS as a way to get attention. To be truthful, there

probably is a large group of adults who do this too. There are many ploys that

people with no illness use to get attention.

Whoever this older person is that was your friend, she definitely does not

understand children or EDS for that matter. Maybe writing her a letter

explaining why this occurred and was in no way a " personal " thing might help.

Maybe

it is not worth your time and effort, only you can decide that for sure.

Anyway, be assured we all understand about these kind of things here on the

list. We understand that it was not meant to be dishonest, just a way for you

to get attention. Perhaps developing a relationship with another person who

has EDS would help. Instead of feeling bad about this, you could laugh at the

different ways you used to get attention......LOL!!!!! Where are you from

Crystal? Email me privately and maybe we can find someone who is close to you.

For me, the relationships I have developed with others who have EDS are very

important. Who better to understand what you are going through.

Hugs,

Sue Ginley
