Overweight Celiac?

I am 5 foot tall and 200 pounds. When I did not lose weight after

regular exercise and 1200 calorie diet, I went to my doctor for more

help. After hormones and blood panels, they also did upper GI scope

and another colonoscopy. I also had a colonoscopy five years ago and

was diagnosed with irritable bowel. IBS because of yo-yoing between

diarrhea and constipation along with bloating and odd-smelling BMs.

I have always been anemic and fainted a lot when I was in high

school from lack of sleep/nutrition.

After the barium tests and more blood antigen tests, the

gastroenterologist thinks I should give this gluten-free thing a

try. The small intestine and the wheat antigens were both

borderline. I am retaining a lot of fluids (edema?) and suffering

from large and small joint pain. My primary care physician says

arthritis is a condition that we haven't proven, but I don't know

what else it could be I have a strong genetic disposition for

arthritis anyway.

So, my question is – How can I be so fat and not be absorbing

anything useful? Isn't one of the good side-effects of being a

celiac supposed to be trying to keep on weight? I am unemployed and

not really looking to pay out-of-pocket for medical advice yet. I

started on the gluten-free diet, but feel no difference after a

week. Normal, I know. However, I am worried that my weight is a

bigger concern and specifically all this protein is not good for

this heart-attack waiting to happen. Any free advice?
