Relax the Stomach With Botox

PHILADELPHIA (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- We've all heard about what Botox can do

for cosmetic uses, wiping away the years by getting rid of wrinkles. Now,

doctors in Philadelphia are using it for medical reasons. It's helping bring

relief to people who live with a chronic stomach condition.

Botox. You know it can erase the signs of aging. Now, the toxin is being

used to treat a chronic condition known as gastroparesis.

" Gastroparesis is where there is delayed emptying of the stomach after a

meal. It may be for solid food or for liquids, which have been taken in by

the patient, " says gastroenterologist Friedenberg, M.D., of Temple

University Hospital in Philadelphia.

The condition causes a person to feel full after just a small meal. It also

causes bouts of nausea, upset stomach and bloating.

Sterling knows how debilitating it can be. She says, " I go to bed at

night scared to death that I'm going to wake up feeling so sick that I can't

control my vomiting, which has been happening a lot lately. "

Medications offer relief but often with side effects like restlessness and

fatigue. Some doctors are now turning to Botox as an alternative to drug

therapy.

Dr. Friedenberg says, " The idea behind Botox is that it's a very local

treatment, so you do not get side effects related to it, and it works right

in the area that is involved with gastroparesis. "

Botox is injected into the muscle that sits at the end of the stomach.

There, it goes to work. " The muscle relaxes and then there is more rapid

emptying of the stomach for solids and for liquids, " Dr. Friedenberg says.

There's good reason to believe Botox will mean success. Up to half of study

participants showed improvement after the procedure. And there's more good

news. Doctors say the treatment is not painful, and a sedative is given

before the 15-minute procedure begins. The benefits usually last between

three months and six months, so repeat treatments are necessary.

Can't say - I would get barred from the list for REALLY bad language.

But, I admit to being biased against Botox on general principles.

On the other hand, other parts of the article were pure crap, such

as " We've all heard about what Botox can do for cosmetic uses,

wiping away the years by getting rid of wrinkles. " Botox does NOT

get rid of the wrinkles. All it does is temporarily paralyze

certain facial muscles to give the appearance that the wrinkles are

gone. But it is purely temporary and very expensive. It lasts from 3-

6 months and then has to be repeated or the wrinkles come back. If

I'm going to " erase " something, I expect it to stay erased and not

keep popping back up like some kind of whoopie candle.

Sarcastic bias aside, my big issue with using Botox for

gastroparesis is that it is obviously NOT fixing the problem because

it is (like the wrinkles) strictly temporary. Maybe that's what the

article means about " more good news " - lots more money for the

doctors performing the procedure.

I don't KNOW that they would work, but I would personally certainly

check out either Visceral Manipulatin or Chi Nei Tsang as possible

alternatives that might actually work longer term and be much less

expensive. I don't KNOW because I have had no reason to check into

them for this. All I am saying is that they are two options that I

would personally investigate if I were in this situation.

Exactly how I felt about it Mike. I thought it was something, coming from a

site that reports " medical-type " news! They should have at least put

something in there, a warning or something, in my opinion!
