Guest guest
Oh GINA!!!!!!! I'm so glad everybody is okay. My mother in law repeatedly tells me not to leave the dryer on when I leave the house, but I never listen to her. Maybe I will from now on. I'm glad you have someplace to stay!!! Mareyllen holy smokes! literally! i just got back to my mom's. i was at my house fighting a fire in my dryer! mike's mom called me here earlier this evening saying that she smelled smoke and she thought maybe it was coming from my apartment. i asked her if she saw smoke or heard the smoke alarms, but she didn't. i told her i'd come by, but i never did. about 2 hours later she called back and said that she was gonna have to call the fire dept cause she still smelled the smoke. i told her i'd be right there. i went over, but i still couldn't believe there would be something on the fire that hadn't already burned everything down. well, i got to my apartment and there was indeed the smell of smoke coming from inside. i opened the front door and it all came billowing out. it was thick, but not thick enough that i couldn't see, so i went in. when i got near the bathroom door, the smell was much stronger. i opened the bathroom door and got shot by a big black cloud of smoke. it was only then that the smoke alarms went off! anyway, after the initial blast, i was able to see and i saw that the dryer door was billowed out and there were scorch marks on it. i opened the dryer door and there was a fire inside! i quick shut the door and ran back outside to tell his mom, who was already on the phone with the fire dept. while we were waiting for the firetrucks, i went back in and opened a few windows, but then the smoke just got too much for me, so i went outside with everyone else. a few minutes later, 3 trucks and the fire chief showed up. they hooked their hose up to the hydrant right outside my apartment and went in and got the fire out. then they proceeded to take the dryer right out of the bathroom and brought it outside. then they busted up the ceiling to make sure the fire wasn't in the vent hose as well. luckily it wasn't, but now i have no ceiling in the bathroom. well, i do, but it's all on the floor :-/ so then i had to hang around for a while longer while they investigated. they went and checked upstairs and there was no actual smoke up there, so mike's mom was allowed back up. meanwhile, the whole neighborhood was out to see what was going on, so i went around and told everyone what happened. see, when i left my house yesterday morning, the dryer was on, but apparantly it never shut off and the motor finally burned out which is what caused the fire. so after about 2 hours, everything was finally done. it was determined to be mechanical failure and that was that. as far as any damage to the house, there is none but the bathroom ceiling being gone, but because it was electrical, the dryer and oven breakers were both shut off and need to stay off until the landlord comes and checks it all out. so, in the meantime, we'll be staying at my mom's. i imagine we'll be here til at least thursday evening. so that's how i spent my easter night, but everybody's ok, and that's what really matters :-/

Guest guest
You know, we have had that happen before. In fact, I think it was about two years ago. Our old dryer finally bit it. Hell of a way to get the thing replaced. Glad everything is more or less ok. Guest guest
, I'm so thankful that Mike's mom noticed the smoke smell, but you really shouldn't have enterred once you knew it was coming from your apartment!! You are so lucky that by opening the door and the window that it didn't cause the fire to burn worse and spread or explode! And being in the smoke isn't safe for you or the baby! Please promise me you won't do anything like that again! Sue

Guest guest
Oh no, . I'm so glad you are all ok! I hope your apartment gets fixed up soon. , whose worst nightmare is a fire during the night and having to stand outside with n, trying to restrain him and keep him from running off into the darkness while all our worldly possessions go up in flames. holy smokes! > literally! > i just got back to my mom's. i was at my house fighting a fire in my > dryer! mike's mom called me here earlier this evening saying that she > smelled smoke and she thought maybe it was coming from my apartment. > i asked her if she saw smoke or heard the smoke alarms, but she > didn't. i told her i'd come by, but i never did. about 2 hours later > she called back and said that she was gonna have to call the fire > dept cause she still smelled the smoke. i told her i'd be right > there. i went over, but i still couldn't believe there would be > something on the fire that hadn't already burned everything down. > well, i got to my apartment and there was indeed the smell of smoke > coming from inside. i opened the front door and it all came billowing > out. it was thick, but not thick enough that i couldn't see, so i > went in. when i got near the bathroom door, the smell was much > stronger. i opened the bathroom door and got shot by a big black > cloud of smoke. it was only then that the smoke alarms went off! > anyway, after the initial blast, i was able to see and i saw that the > dryer door was billowed out and there were scorch marks on it. i > opened the dryer door and there was a fire inside! i quick shut the > door and ran back outside to tell his mom, who was already on the > phone with the fire dept. > while we were waiting for the firetrucks, i went back in and opened a > few windows, but then the smoke just got too much for me, so i went > outside with everyone else. a few minutes later, 3 trucks and the > fire chief showed up. they hooked their hose up to the hydrant right > outside my apartment and went in and got the fire out. then they > proceeded to take the dryer right out of the bathroom and brought it > outside. then they busted up the ceiling to make sure the fire wasn't > in the vent hose as well. luckily it wasn't, but now i have no > ceiling in the bathroom. well, i do, but it's all on the floor :-/ > so then i had to hang around for a while longer while they > investigated. they went and checked upstairs and there was no actual > smoke up there, so mike's mom was allowed back up. meanwhile, the > whole neighborhood was out to see what was going on, so i went around > and told everyone what happened. see, when i left my house yesterday > morning, the dryer was on, but apparantly it never shut off and the > motor finally burned out which is what caused the fire. > so after about 2 hours, everything was finally done. it was > determined to be mechanical failure and that was that. as far as any > damage to the house, there is none but the bathroom ceiling being > gone, but because it was electrical, the dryer and oven breakers were > both shut off and need to stay off until the landlord comes and > checks it all out. so, in the meantime, we'll be staying at my mom's. > i imagine we'll be here til at least thursday evening. > so that's how i spent my easter night, but everybody's ok, and that's > what really matters :-/ > > >
