Finally after 8 months, Dylan's electric chair has been approved! That was no

easy task. The primary insurance will only cover a basic electric chair and the

Crippled Children's insurance has approved the remainder of the charge. The

primary insurance was fighting, saying the chair that was ordered was considered

a luxury and wasn't needed. Well being that the boy will be sitting in all day

instead of a school desk, it is necessary. I finally can hope he can return to

school in Sept! He has been homebound for almost a year and a half. It is way

over due to get him out in the world again. Happy day!

Oh, Cindy --

I am so glad for Dylan. What a long haul both of you have had -- all I can say

is Happy Wheeling and enjoy taking the dog outside!!!!!

That is really great news. It will be nice for him to have some

freedom. I'm sure he will give the greyhound a run for his money!

Cindy (and Dylan),

What wonderful news... Finally after all of the hassle you went

through trying to explain there was NO luxury in what was needed, you

have got what he NEEDS to cope with his disability and condition and

to make it so that 1. he will use it and 2. it helps hima nd doesn't

hurt him or make his pain worse or put his joints into compromised

positions.

I can't believe these beuracrats that think a powerchair with

necessary adapations and parts is a luxury, it is what his PT and or

OT said he needs, it is not as if you went through a book of

accessories yourself and picked everything .

Well at last it has been approved so now when does it arive????

When will Dylan get his freedom and independance back and be able to

join in with his friends and peers socially again???

will be intering a school where no one knows him. There are other kids in chairs

there. That is what he wants. Right now the only time I can get him outside is

after dark, or in the back yard. He just can't come to terms with what he has to

deal with, and have people see him now. If I can get him to go around the block

with the dogs in daylight, I'll be winning a big goal! This issue is a hard on

to deal with. I just don't know how to help him get over this. I understand, but

I know it's not mentally healthy. Cindylouwho

They said 4 to 8 weeks. It has to be custom made because he is so tall. He

Is there any chance of getting Dylan to see a councellor (either a

genetic or disability preferably disability), they should have these

at hospitals and stuff to deal with people/ teens who are disabled in

acidents etc (i.e new paraplegic etc) as his state is not much

different because he went from a pretty normal teen to a disabled

teen in a short time and this is LOT to come to terms with, without

help. This way he can talk and work through his issue and feeling

abut being a disabled teen and disabled adult later. This is just a

suggestion but I am sure it would help him. He needs to be able to

feel comfortable outside of the house, as it is NOT healthy to stay

inside. Maybe once he is in the chair this will be a little better,

becuase then his like any other chair user and not a teen relying on

a walker/cane etc to stand and walk and maybe he is also a little

fearful of being hurt physically by others, and the chair offers some

protection.

Good Luck with getting him to come to terms with all of the HUGE

changes in his life and here is hoping that he comes to terms with it

as fast as possible and is out running the dogs in his chair in no

time.

Hi Sharon. He see a disability councilor now and a pain councilor, but just sets

there like a log and won't talk. He HATES the counseling! I'm going to call her

and ask for a name of someone else. Maybe it would help to see a different one,

although I dought it very much. He is getting PT at home right now, and I'm

hoping he gets a little stronger over the summer. I try all the time to get him

out, but he won't go in his manual chair. Maybe when he gets to school he will

become used to being seen in the chair and he'll overcome some of that. I think

the thought of strolling down the sidewalk with him and the dogs sounds

wonderful, but he sees it entirely different.

I'll just keep working on it. I have to get him out of his room. Now that the

weather is warmer, I'm going to put the lawn chairs outside and try to get him

to sit on the porch with me. That would be a step in the right direction.
