Guest guest
While we're on the subject of homeschooling, I thought I better mention an alternative to high school too. There are two different correspondence type of set ups in Ontario that I'm aware of that offer high school courses. One is the " Independant Learning Center " www.ilc.org and the other is AMDEC www.amdec.ca. ILC are traditional correspondence through the mail courses, where as AMDEC is all done 'online' through the internet, a special emailing program, class chats, and online textbooks and teachers notes. It's not free of all problems, but for me it's given me a way to complete high school. I just thought maybe mentioning these alternatives to high school might be helpful for some. I stuck through it in HS as long as I could until finally I was just doing 1/2 a day and then I just couldn't do it anymore. The 'desks' (you know the lovely old things from the early 80s with a broken chair attatched to the desk? Thats what my school had when I was there from 2001 to 2003) made sitting (something already hard for my back & shoulders) impossible and at the end of just one class everything would be hurting. Pain made (and makes!) concentrating hard and to try to concentrate through pain to understand what the teacher is saying in an out of control classroom was impossible. Note taking I eventually gave up on as my fingers started cramping up and my writing was not legible. I was never told that any special services were available to me. But anyway any special chair or desk I might have been able to get would have been stolen or vandalized there anyway. I agree, a loosing battle! Although I am happier doing schooling at home through AMDEC it is not free of frusterations as computer glitches and bad pain days cause me to fall behind in my 'modules' and offers me plenty of stress. I wish there was an easier way to do this! Sheesh, is it to much to ask for an education? :-/ :-O >:-X -Rhea PS. When I enquired about homeschooling from the local high school there reply was that it's only meant for kids who break a leg and come back in 6 weeks, that the teachers wouldn't be able to make it work for me, and that anyway whatever college or university I'd want to go to would find out that I homeschooled and wouldn't want me. Hows that for being brushed off? >:-X
Guest guest
Hi Rhea, We will be using the ILC elementary programs for my guys. I liked this set up because it actually give the kids every strand of each section of the curriculum instead of doing some of it like they do at school. The elematary course have been updated and are due for release this summer. The cost is $120 for the whole academic year with report cards each term. The home instruction provided by the school board currently provides 5 hours of instructional time a week (this is the provincial standard). The teachers are not allowed to use any work completed while they are not their towards evaluation (new ministry of education policy). Needless to say got only 2 marks on his whole report card. Through ILC the kids have phone or email contact with their teacher and can submit their work through e-mail or snail mail. There is no enrichment for the programs so we will be doing it ourselves with a classically based curriculum. Good luck with your courses. C.
