Hi Karol,

I hope I can answer your question..if not someone else in the group will I'm sure!

D.O. stands for Doctor of Osteopathy......They get their medical degree from a school of Osteopathy.......I think they have the same number of years of training as an M.D......they just go to different schools.

It has been my experience that Doctors of Osteopathy tend to treat the whole person .....Physically, mentally, and sometimes even spirtually.....

For instance an M.D. treats ` (the Heart Attack in room 123'.).......the D.O. treat the patient in room 123 as (`Joe's Wife....mother of & ....who loves to garden and Paint in oils.)

They seem to take the time to get to know the whole person.....and not just treat the symptoms that a person is presented with.

When I was in the Osteopathic Hospital where I was finally diagnosed with Lupus.....there was a ` manipulation Therapist' that came everyday and did very gentle and slow manipulations of my body......and taught me how to breathe more efficiently taking very deep breathes extending my stomach muscles, not just my diaphram.....he even adjusted the bones of my head.....of all things.!

I noticed that while he was adjusting my body......he watched my face....and then went back and did more manipulations of the tender or tight parts of my body........It was the most relaxing experience I've ever had. Nothing like a massage or chiropractic manipulations.

I'm sorry that Your Mother has not had a good experience with her D.O.

I can just say that when I had my D.O. doctors .....I had the best care I ever had.

I hope your Mother gets better, and gets a diagnosis.....and I hope I havn't given any wrong info. about what the difference is between D.O. and M.D. doctors.....it's just my opinion.....and my experience.

Hi Barb, Believe me.......I have learned my lesson about getting my lab. reports! This is something I will insist on from now on.......I have my medical files from Dr. Foreman, the Rheumatologist that I used to go to when I was first diagnosed......they had a wonderful staff of Doctors. It was a Teaching Hospital, and all the doctors there worked together and coordinated and cooporated with each other in their patients care. My Rheumatologist was also a Professor of Rheumatology.....and gave lectures ....everyone knew and respected him. He saved my life. This was the University of North Texas Health & Science Center & Osteopathic Hospital.........I got spoiled.....then Wham! My Health Insurance dropped all the D.O. Doctors from their Network of Health care Providers. Since then it has been Hell trying to find good Medical Care and getting the doctors to communicate with each other and with me. I seems that Doctors of Osteopathy are looked down on by the Medical community for some reason.....stating that since they don't have the same number of years of Medical Training that Medical Doctors do......they are not `Real Doctors' or some such nonsense...... It has been My experience that the D.O.s tend to treat the Patient as a Whole Person..........instead of a Patient with a whole lot of symptoms! When I take my files from Doctor Foreman, who diagnosed me......saved my life.....and gave me such good care during my first five years of living with `The Wolf'......I get the remark ........,"Oh he was a D.O.!"........and won't even look at my medical records from him...... How ever I have decided to make copies of my records from Dr. Foreman......of course still keeping my copy.....(.by the way ,My Primary Care Doctor has a copy of Dr. Foreman's notes......but when I asked if those records were sent to the New Rheumy.....that I'm waiting for an appt. with.......I was told that they weren't ."Just Dr. Ohman's Notes." were sent.) Can someone explain this to me?......I just hope that my Apt. Manager will let me make copies on their copy machine......(.it's about 3" thick !! ) If not I'll go to Kinkos or someplace like that ...... Can you explain this prejudice against Doctors of Osteopathy to me? It seems that all the Doctors are on the other team!!..........O.K.......O.K.......I'll shut up again. Hi ,

Thanks for the info. I wish I could go with my mother to her doctor visit but she lives about seven hours away from me so I don't get to see her that often. I think she has lost confidence in her doctor since he keeps ordering all the tests. It seems that all the doctors that share the same clinic have invested in their own diagnostic equipment i.e. CT scan, MRI just to name a couple. Mom seems to think they just want to pay for the machines. I don't know what to think. Mom is getting up there in age (79) is can be kind of cranky. But, Mom does have problems and I am hoping her doctor is just trying to figure out what's wrong with her. I'll tell you the truth, if he would only give her something for the pain she has I think she would feel much better. Her doctor seems to be the kind of doc that's afraid to prescribe pain medications.

Hi Karol,

I don't blame your mom for being cranky, and feeling as though she is not being well taken care of can only add to her frustration!......It's too bad that you live so far away from her.

Does she have anyone else who can act as her advocate in seeing that she gets good medical care?

Maybe if you call her insurance co. and tell them that your mom needs help with making decisions about her health care, and that she is not happy with her present physicians, and the care they are giving her, they can help her.

I know there are doctors who don't like to prescribe pain medications....even ran into one like that myself, and he was a D.O.

But you can't have good quality of life if you are in pain, and have no faith in your doctors.

Good Luck,

C.
