Carol -

How are you doing after your surgery? I'm sure the ladies will tell you

that you've been on our minds these past few days wondering how you are.

Here's hoping to a speedy recovery and increased strength every day!

Hi Juli!

Back in 1990 they took 23 nodes of mine but now I think most just take the

sentinel node and maybe a few more if they feel the have to. I had absolutely NO

pain with my mastectomy. I never took a pain pill in the hospital or when home.

I was 44 at the time, had one bad node, 6 mo chemo, no radiation or

reconstruction.

I didn't spend anytime in bed. As a matter of fact, at that time we were

photographers for our volunteer fire/ambulance dept and there was a call about 2

hrs after I got home so off I went! Keep us posted. I will keep you in my

prayers.

I am about to have a mastetomy and a bunch (not sure how many yet)of

nodes removed. I have IIIb breast cancer. I am 43. I've been told I

will probably come home from the hospital the next day. How long is

usual to be in bed at home afterwards...... how is the pain? I'm not

sure what to expect.

thanks,

Juli

Hi Juli,

I don't remember too much pain from the mastectomy. My lumpectomy and

sentinel node biopsy (2 nodes removed) took a little longer to recover

from. I think it was due to taking a while to get my range of motion

back after the nodes were removed. I had some prescription medicine in

the hospital and perhaps the next day (chemo brain strikes again), but

switched quickly to tylenol. I don't remember much discomfort. I

remember not even wanting to stay in the hospital overnight, but they

talked me into it since it was late by the time I was out of surgery. It

was nice to have the nurse change my drain bulb.

I think those were the days of drive by mastectomies. There have been

laws passed in many states that no longer allow that. I believe

overnight is the norm now. I was in three nights (complications, just

what I needed!) and strongly encouraged to stay longer, but wanted to

go home and so did. Went home on a Saturday and the surgeon insisted

on seeing me that Monday.

I opted for a mastectomy without reconstruction which should happen Monday

At the same time I will have a hysterectomy

My Dr said it will be rough but I chose to do both together

Plans are I will be put on a " chemo " pill for 5 years following surgery

IF everything is within the margins

IF anything is outside of the margins I will need additional treatment " chemo

or radiation "

So if we can get a surgeon and the extra time in operating room

After Monday I will begin the healing process

Wanda its normal to be scared. We all were/are. I have had both a mastectomy and

hysterectomy and am doing fine. The hysterectomy was several yrs after the

mastecomy.

Hang in there and take it one day at a time or hour by hour, minute by minute if

necessary. Feel free to share your feelings with us. Continued prayers.
