Guest guest
GFR stands for Glumeri filtration rate. the glumeris filter the waste. I believe you have about 2 million of them. Sorry about the spelling on glumeri i know it's wrong but don't have time to check. Carla wrote:I've been doing some research and I'm confused what does GFR mean. They list it on the kidney disease chart Stage 1-5 but I can figure out what it means. Stage 1 is suppose to have >90 ??? Thanks, CC Re: Measuring the kidney function Hi Essi, Kidney function is generally calculated by looking to creatinine clearance. Creatinine clearance is measured in ml per minute, which refers to the volume of filtrate made by the kidneys every minute. Curiously, the creatinine clearance number is also roughly equivalent to the percentage of kidney function. Generally creatinine clearance is based upon urine and serum creatinine levels (that's your blood and urine tests) and the urine volume (how much you pee in 24 hours). The formula also takes account of your your age (creatinine clearance normally goes down as you age) and weight. Relatively young people have over 100% kidney function (which is why you can get away with donating one kidney!) It is entirely possible to have 100% function and a very high protein spill. Urine protein by itself is not a measure of how diseased one's kidneys are. However, high urine protein can cause further scarring - which is why you want to to control it. Can they tell it from biopsy or 24h urine or how? I've been told that I still have 100% and I'm just curious how can they tell. (I have 24h protein spill from 700mg to 1500mg and they said my IgAN is very aggresive, so how can I be 100%?) - Essi ps.
