Your email build a lot of hope as my daughter has just done her

second cast with Dr. calburn in Pleasenton. He is such a great

doctor however i am very worried from the bars. I feel that casting

and tenetomy is not what really concerns me as the bars.

Anyway thanks for your email

Holly,

Thank you for letting me know about the family from Las Vegas in

Iowa City. Here is some of the rest of that story.

Our was born over 5 years ago here in Las Vegas. As we went

through the experience of finding out about the Ponseti method, we

shared what had happened with our pediatricians. We told them that

when they saw another child born with clubfoot that they should

refer them for the Ponseti method.

But since there are about 55,000 pediatricians in the U.S. and only

5,000 children with clubfoot born each year, we figured that each

pediatrician would statistically only see about one new clubfoot

child every 10 years. But if a pediatrician was in a group, then

their group would see a new clubfoot child more often.

Anyway, over the years, as we have taken in our children for shots,

colds, etc. we usually would update our pediatrician in what was

happening in the expansion of the Ponseti method. About 2 months

ago, when I took one of our other children in for a bad cold, our

pediatrician said that they had seen the recent article on the

Ponseti method in the Journal of Pediatrics and realized that was

what we had been telling him about for the past few years. The

abstract of the article from the journal Pediatrics, February 2004

issue, titled " Radical Reduction in the Rate of Extensive Corrective

Surgery for Clubfoot Using the Ponseti Method " can be seen at

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/2/376

We also took him a copy of the article on the " Effect of the

Internet on the Treatment of Congenital Idiopathic Clubfoot "

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?

cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=14575256 & dopt=Abstract

A few weeks later, we got a call from our pedicatrician saying that

he had some parents who had a new baby with clubfoot and wondered if

we would be willing to talk to them. A week or so later, they e-

mailed us and we then talked by phone. They had already decided

that they wanted to use the Ponseti method and to go to Iowa. They

would have been there over the past couple of weeks. It is

interesting that you never know how sharing information on the

Ponseti method will affect things in the future for others.

Thanks for letting us know that they are there.

Thanks for telling me that story - that's wonderful that a

pediatrician in your area is recommending his/her patients to seek

the Ponseti method of treatment. Even more wonderful that you have

had a hand in promoting the method, and specifally had a hand in the

parents I saw in Iowa City being there. They looked a bit scared,

as we all did, but after they saw Zachary I really could see a sense

of relief come over them.
