I would challenge the assertion that no one has done more

resurfacings than Dr Amstutz. It may be true of the US but there are

surgeons in Europe who have done thousands.

As far as I know, McMinn and Treacy have each done multiples of the number of

resurfacings done by Amstutz. It sounds like DeSmet could be next in line

after McMinn and Treacy, although maybe one of the other surgeons in Birmingham

is - don't really know.

When I had my second one in May, 2003, Treacy had done about 2,500 or more,

but in addition to the experience, the critical thing is the success rate. By

now, that number must be about 3,000 each at least. On a normal busy day,

Treacy does about 6. He operates three days a week. When you do these in 25-40

minutes each, you can really fly.

I believe Treacy and McMinn are about neck and neck in terms of the number

they've each done and the success rate.

Sadly, in terms of accomplishment, US surgeons are way behind the Brits for

resurfacing and we can thank the insurance industry, the FDA and narrow-minded

surgeons who want to protect their turf for that. In that regard, it's great

being the patient - at least we can't be blamed!

Bilateral and California resident who chose to fly to Birmingham twice on his

own nickel to get it done right (and inexpensively).

Des

I met Mr Treacy last Monday. I understood that he has already

exceeded 3,000.
