Hello All,

We have been attempting potty training...I'm just thinking ahead and

had a question. Once I have Collin fully trained during the day and

attempt to let him wear underwear all night...How does that work

with the DBB? He can get around with his DBB on but I don't see how

he could get to the bathroom, then turn the light on (We could keep

it on when we get to that point) then climb onto the potty with the

shoes on. How has everyone else did it?????? Has everyone been

successful having the kids night trained while still in the DBB or

was it once they were out? Collin is 3 now but I think he will be

in the DBB at least another full year. I'm still working on the

day, but I want to have a plan once we get to the night. It is so

hard though since his father and I both work full time all week. I

feel like a weekend/weeknight potty trainer.

We've decided to just leave Dylan in pull-ups until the DBB comes

off (besides the fact that he's not staying dry at night). Dylan is

completely trained during the day, but he's still in pull-ups at

night. I don't think he'd be able to manage the potty at night with

the DBB on.

My Livie will be three in October and is now fully potty trained. She can do

some amazing things in her FAB with her mobility, but climbing onto the potty in

the middle of the night with it on is not one of them. Right now if she wakes

in the middle of the night and has to go, she calls for one of us and we take

her. We both work full time also, so waking in the middle of the night is not

fun, but fortunately for us, she doesn't do it often. She also goes right back

to sleep after going, so it's not a long time. I also limit the amount of

liquid that she drinks before bedtime and have her go at least twice before

she's actually in bed. Usually before and after bath.

When she was training, we used pull ups at night, but that didn't last long for

her. She wanted to be a " big girl " all the time, not just during the day. We

told her if she had to go at night then she could try to go by herself or call

for us and we would come help her.

Livie had a relapse at 2.5 years old, so I'm positive that we are in for FAB

wear for another year if not more.

Over all, she has been incredibly easy to train. Our older son who does not

have clubfoot was much more difficult and had night time accidents for at least

a year after being day trained. And he refused to even start training until he

was 3 and 1/2 years old.

Good Luck!

Michele,

turned 3 in August. He is completely trained through the day

and wears underwear all through the day. But at night he wears a

diaper. He wakes up 90% of the time wet in the morning. His bladder

just isn't large/strong enough to make it through the night yet. He

makes it thru naps just fine (2-3 hours). Sometimes he wakes up in

the middle of the night to go to the bathrooom and when he does he

hollers for mom or dad (he still has a monitor in his room). We get

him out of bed and take him. The easiest way for us is to pull his

pants/diaper (he uses the convertable) down while he's laying in bed

and then carry him and sit him on the potty. He does fine sitting on

the potty with the shoes on, but if he has to sit there very long (to

do #2) then he seems to get a little uncomfortable. After he's done

I stand him up (putting my foot on the bar to steady him because he's

half asleep) and I pull his diaper and pants back up.

All kids are different, but none of my kids (clubfoot or not) tended

to get up on their own in the middle of the night and go to the

bathroom.. so it hasn't been a problem for us. At first we used Pull-

ups at night, but haven't needed to for quite some time. (she's 4.)

I just make sure she goes before bed, and she lasts till morning. If

she were to wake up and need anything in the night, she calls for me.

(I think she'd do that even if she didn't have the shoes on.)

I now usually wait to put the brace on until after she's gone to

sleep. Usually I take it off in in the morning, but a few times,

recently, a new thing.. she has done it herself, which is fine!

It is not something she resists. She is completely comfortable

sleeping in it and knows it's her nighttime thing, just like pajamas.

Theresa,

Are you home with Dylan during the day? I haven't even accomplished

getting him to train during the day. He has went a few times on the

little potty but he is very stuborn about it. It's so hard because

he is with his grandma during the day from about 7:30 am until about

5:30 pm and she just is really different from me and does things her

own way...she really hasn't done anything at this point to help with

the potty process. Don't get me wrong she's great but just not with

keeping the routine I would like Collin to have..My neice is with

her also a few days a week who is 3 weeks yonger then Collin but she

is trained during the day already. I feel like I need to just take

a month out of my life and off work and just stay home and I could

have him trained...but I know that's not going to happen.

Pam,

& Collin are so close in age!!!!! If you have any tips too on

how you trained him for the day I would be glad to take any. Were

you home with him when you trained him? I am just at a lost for

potty training right now.... I really feel like a weekend potty

trainer, it's on my mind so much since it's Friday and I know it

will be on my weekend quest. I did take Collin around the block

about 2 weekends ago for a ride on his scooter and he stayed dry in

his underwear...as soon as we came home I asked him if he had to

go. He said no, I asked again 5 minutes later if he would sit on

the potty and try, he said no. A minute later he had an accident I

should of just sat him there when I got home instead of asking I

guess...but I always hear not to be pushy with potty training

especially with little boys or they will have no interest.

You can also just do the normal/typical things like reducing their liquid-intake

a few hours before bed time so they don't really need to pee during the night.

Can Collin get in to a chair wearing his DBB by himself? A toilet shouldn't be

much different, perhaps put a rail beside the toilet he can grab for help, or

maybe a potty-seat thing although I never used one it might be an option he

could work with, even put it by his bed at night?

Re: Potty Training & DBB/FAB

We are not to this point yet but you could try using one of the potty

chairs and put it in his room beside the bed. Then he wouldn't have

to go far.

I'm just curious, those of you who put the bar on after they're asleep, how many

hours do they end up wearing it? I aim for a solid 13 hours, hopefully 14 but

I won't go below 13 so I put it on him at 7 pm after his bath and take it off at

8 or 9 the next day. If it were strictly his sleeping hours he wouldn't get

enough hours in the bar.

Well back and look at it again - is Collin ready to potty train? Is he showing

all the signs that he's ready? Otherwise you're probably fighting a losing

battle, kwim? I had a book called something like " Potty Training in a Day " and

while I doubt that is practical or possible very often it did have some really

good tips I used training . It was an old book you might find at a used

book store, like 1970's type of book, paper back, yellow cover.

Some things I recall are to make a list of cheer leaders ...phone numbers of

people you can call immediately when the child succeeds to brag on him, right

there at the moment so he feels proud. This tip actually worked great with

.

Keep an apron pocket full of M&M's or something for immediate rewards.

Aim for a bigger reward if he does it x times in a row successfully.

Have the child actually practice RUNNING to the bathroom from various parts of

the house as fast as he can whether he needs to potty or not, just to teach

them the drill. Have them do this sometimes in the middle of a TV show or

game, so they learn they can't wait till that show/game is over - they gotta go

when they gotta go! Help them understand their toy, etc., will be there when

they get back, they aren't losing anything by going to the toilet.

For older child, make them clean up their own accidents, change their own pants,

rinse their own underwear. Not sure if I agree with that or not, I made him

change his own wet pants but I doubt I'd have him do a poopy pants or it would

end up all over the place (eeewww!)

If the child is staying dry most nights and is showing interst in the toilet,

it's a good time to start. Also, do you let Collin follow you or your dh in the

bathroom? Mine are always in there with me, don't know if that helps or not -

but oh the books I've read sitting on the toilet! LOL! I get no privacy.

Hope some of this might help.

You know letting them run naked really helps - because when they wet they feel

it immediately and soon learn to associate the feeling of a full bladder with

the feeling of a wet leg. I've heard using pull-ups hinders progress because

there is no cause & effect happening since the child stays so dry after an

accident. Cloth diapers might be a day-time option to teach them the feel of

teh bladder compared to the feel of a soggy diaper immediately after wards. And

some kids just don't have the muscle control yet - that's always a

consideration, it may not be physically possible for them yet to control their

evacuations.

I should've clarified, that I have only been putting it on that late

(after going to sleep) now that she's older, probably quite a bit

older than most here.

I didn't do it when she was younger. She always got the 12 hour

minimum at least -- and before that the 14-16, and the 16-18, etc. --

and always wore it during naps when she was of napping age.

We're at the point now where she could be out of it entirely, but are

continuing to be on the safe side a little while longer, since she

doesn't resist and I don't mind it either.

I deffinalty think he is ready and shows all of the signs. I do the

reward thing, he could careless about stickers so I usually give him

pennies for his bank or a food reward like fruit snacks or peanut

mm's. I really can't do the naked thing because I'm at work the

whole day, I could do it partially on weekends but with errands, etc

I would just be able to do it a little and we just had brand new

carpets put down in our play/family room and in our computer/lounge

room so I really want them to stay nice. I usually keep his little

potty downstairs while we are down there in the living room where we

still have old carpet, but I really think it would be hard to limit

him to that room if I took his cloths off. He deffialty know's when

he has to do #2, and has done it successfully on potty a few

times...He just hasn't done #1 on potty yeat at all, I have tried

putting apple jack's in it to let him go on them for fun, I told him

he could shoot them like he shoots things with his water gun (I

couldn't think of a good example!!!!) I'm not sure if he know's

when he has to #1, but with #2 he always announces it no matter

where we are or who is around. My goal was to potty train Collin

before we add to our family (& loose the 35 pounds I've put on since

October...scary huh??? I'm at the same weight as the day I gave

birth to Collin...I lost it all but gained it all back, you will be

able to see once I post the syopsism photo, then look at our website

at the photos!)

Michele,

You are not going to BELIEVE this! Never type that your child is

completely trained. Because I typed something similiar to that

today, then we went out to run errands. Well he fell asleep while we

were in the car for about 20 minutes. We get to the library, I wake

him up and guess what??? His underwear, pants, carseat and even the

bottom of his shirt is soaked! He must have really been sleeping (or

I really jinxed him:). Okay now for hints, or how we did it, if you

still want them! :)

We started letting him use the potty at about 18 months old or so,

but not on a regular basis, just for a fun thing. It was just kind

of to familiarize him with it. By the time he was 2, we had him to

pee pee each evening before he would get into the bathtub. I always

use underwear to train because when they have an accident they are

much more aware of it. We actually didn't begin training though

until he was about 2 3/4. He is very independent and did not want to

be told it was time to go potty (even though we could tell he had to

go--dancing around, holding himself, etc.). So we had to make it fun

with a sticker chart. I printed one off the internet. It was like a

checkerboard with potties on it. Each time he would potty he would

get a sticker for his chart and once it was full he got to take it to

Wal-Mart to get a toy (like a $2 toy). Once we went through about 3

of these he was pretty well trained (except for #2 it took him longer

to want to do this in the potty). He started getting constipated

because he was holding it. A few times we had to put diapers back on

him so he would do #2. But he eventually came around to that and was

very proud of himself. He doesn't like putting his diaper on at

night, but there is just no way he would stay dry. Well he would if

I witheld fluids in the evening, but he is a big drinker in the

evening and I just can't put him through wanting something to drink,

begging and not giving it to him. At bedtime he says I don't want to

put these diapers on I'm a big boy. Good luck! Don't let the potty

monopolize your weekend!

Here's hoping pee and poopy are going down your potty, :))))))

put these diapers on I'm a big boy. Good luck! Don't let the potty

monopolize your weekend!

Here's hoping pee and poopy are going down your potty, :))))))
