Guest guest
Seems many of us react strongly to all kinds of contact with tape, chemicals in bath soaps, and even lotions. Isn't it so frustrating to have to worry whenever doing something new? One of the things that can help some with tape reactions (and also to ekg leads) is to have the nurse apply a product called Skin Prep (or one like it) before applying the tape/adhesive. It comes in little individual packages like the alcohol preps & is wiped on and allowed to dry. It both helps the skin not to tear/react and also helps the tape stick. This isn't something automatically done, so you have to ask for it. You can also ask for an elasticized bandage called Coban to be used instead of tape and gauze when you have to have a bandage taped on an extremity such as when you have blood drawn or a small bandage. Then there is no tape on the skin at all...I always just hold the site until it stops bleeding rather than have the problems caused by the tape. I am sure it won't help everyone, but it has helped me a lot. Another thing I have found helpful is to not scratch these irritated areas with your fingernails but to use the balls of your fingertips; it can help prevent further breakdown. Good luck! Guest guest
Just a precaution with coban (I used to wrap the boys in it every day). It used to be made with latex. Coban is now latex free but incredibly expensive. We use roll flex which is made by and Nephew for . We also learned that vet wrap made by 3M is just like coban but much cheaper. You might be able to order some through your nearest vet clinic. I have yet to find a tape that can use without getting hives. Is the skin prep latex free? C. It is also wider so you can cut it in half and use it.... It comes in neon colors that kids love! Wherever animal supplies are sold, especially horse supplies, you should be able to find vet wrap as it was made for wrapping horse's legs... Shopko Stores now carry a bandaid that is latex free.
