Guest guest
I made lots of folders (but only 10 compared to your 16!!) last night so my email is all tidied up now. :-))) Must admit, DH is of the opinion that we shouldn't change our settings to suit someone else's pootoo. Guest guest
I have ADSL, it's fast and permanent connection so I prefer to read on the web and not have loads of emails filling up my hard disk Must admit, DH is of the opinion that we shouldn't change our settings to > suit someone else's pootoo. Guest guest
But when I type a message it doesn't look like one long line, so how does it come out that way on the web? Because you are typing in a certain size window, and it shifts and changes to accommodate the typing done in it. Unless you physically press " return " every time you reach the edges of your typing window,(and possibly even if you do!) the computer software just sees it as one long line, and that's how it appears on the web. At least I *think* that's how it works! Ruthie (almost wishing she hadn't started this :-)) )

Guest guest
Off line, in digests. no folders, never bothered, all the coffee's come together, all the homebirths etc etc so easy to read. BTW not wishing to cast nastursiums ruthie but the only emails that cause me much irritation are those with large grey blank areas at the bottom that those of use on digest have to scroll through! Guest guest
indiv emails, sorted by rules into 27 folders, I put the rules in order of group volume for efficiency (Don`t know if it helps, but my prog background says it should!) e.g. coffee near the top, Announce near the bottom. I sort by thread. If not much time I go to the bottom and just read the 'start of thread' messages the ones without 're' in the title, to see what`s new. They seem to be grouped together for some reason. I read in preview pane, I never open them, so I rarely scroll down . I delete or reply as I go with chat groups (though I keep lots from research groups) - the 'find' facility is used a lot to look for teaching ideas on certain subjects. Jokes I want to keep (very rare!) I move across to a 'funny' folder, I tend not to fwd them. I couldn`t work with digests!! I would never be able to retrieve anything later ('the purpose of filing is easy retrieval`) Barbara .

Guest guest
Since I have yahoo mail, I can't download it, so, to save on the amount of time I spend online, I get digests and can open several and just use the back button to go through them and read them all. I have all my NCT egroups (coffee, NCT, announce, and slimmers) going into the same folder. When I signed up for more than just coffee, I tried to put the other ones in another folder, but yahoo didn't want to cooperate, and it turns out it's easier this way. If I know there was something good that I have deleted, I go to the yahoogroups website and search for it. I must be a techno-geek, since this is a fascinating discussion to me Phyllis
Guest guest
I have about six folders for all my different interests. All the NCT groups, as well as HomebirthUK, go directly into the NCT folder. I try to read the emails as they come in (I am permanently logged on), but have failed miserably at this in recent weeks. If I have a backlog of messages to read, I group them by subject (I use MS Outlook). Then I quickly delete the ones I don't think will interest me so that I can focus on the ones that do. If a thread is particularly long (say more than 10 messages), I'll definitely read it, but I'm usually too late to reply (same problem in real life). I've had a bit of ISP trouble recently so have been No-Mail (they are really stroppy about Yahoogroups for some reason). I find the website fairly easy to read, especially when threaded, but I prefer to get the messages come to me automatically rather than logging on to the site. I've now switched my email account to my own domain which seems to be more reliable. I've tried Digest but find that I usually don't read the messages as there is no preview to see. If I do read them, I get confused if someone else on Digest doesn't delete it before replying. If I find something really interesting on a Digest and reply to it, I don't want to wait until the next day for the next exciting installment, so I end up checking the messages on the website anyway. That's how I do it! One preference I have from others - to put their contribution at the top of the post, and the reference from the post they are replying to below it. That way, I can see the new post in the preview, rather than just a repeat of what I have seen before. It's amazing how hard it is to press one little key, LOL. Guest guest
I'm a folders person too. When I used to have to pay for my online time I used to download the emails, read, reply as I went but choose " send later " . If I was feeling virtuous I would wait until the next night when I'd download again and also send yesterdays replies. If I was feeling extravagent I'd send all in one go just before I disconnected. Now my internet is free pms and w/ends I still do mostly the same, but now I will always send before I turn off puter and I check (in anticipation) once or twice in case there is new mail whilst I am reading. Because I read on digest, I've found it actually pays off to read all the mail before you send all the replies as quite often something you were going to say gets said in a later digest and I don't need to bother sending and repeating the information. Guest guest
> Just goes to show how different we all are - I much prefer it when > people put the post they are replying to first I always learnt to put the bit to which you are responding at the top - and I much prefer it this way. If you do it any other way on some newsgroups, you get a lot of hassle, as it is generally the accepted way. It is also easier to follow if someone is responding to a lot of points in a long post. As for how I read my mail - sorted into different folders, individual emails - can't get on with digest at all. I sort in order of receipt, read all the mails first, deleting those I know I don't want to reply to. Then I go through again and delete all those I thought I might reply to but someone else already has and reply to those I want to reply to. Sometimes I don't have the time to do a detailed response so I leave it in the in-tray for a few days, awaiting a good time. More often than not the time doesn't arrive so I delete that too. I'm using Outlook Express which I'm not fond of but it's the only email software I have on this computer and I'm not going to start fiddling and downloading things I don't know just to find I don't like those much either. -- Sue

Guest guest
>I'm intrigued though, which internet service provider do >you use (maybe yahoo?)? I forward all my yahoo emails to my >linone account which I can then read offline, or the phone >line would never be free! Do you have a reason for not >wanting an off-lineable account? We currently have a Connect deal with NTL as they don’t yet have the flat rate internet deal in our area. I tend to connect a lot during the day, which isn’t covered by Connect (it’s only for evenings and weekends), so the phone bills are still pretty high. I can read my emails offline, too, I just need to open them all and then can use the forward and back buttons to maneuver through them. It generally takes less than a minute to log in to yahoo and open all the morning digests. But I tend to check back in a lot and if I’m bored while Calvin naps, I go to the web page and read everything new that I haven’t had in digest yet... Then I write replies in a Word document and send them all as quickly as possible, which takes a minute or two as well. I don’t *not* want an off-lineable account, but I have been using yahoo for all my email for a few years, with moving from country to country and ISP to ISP and find it very convenient, plus I don’t automatically download viruses and don’t clog up my tiny section of hard drive. I also am not reliant on any more Microsoft ‘technology’ (like Outlook) than necessary (though my DH thinks we should switch completely over to Linux and I don’t mind staying with Windows. The devil you know and all that). Boringly yours, Phyllis __________________________________________________
Guest guest
>Caro asked: Now my internet is free pms and w/ends I still do mostly the same, - what package have you got at the moment - and was it uncomplicated to set up? I swapped from Tesco to LineOne. They seemed to be one of the cheapest for their monthly charge £4 plus the extra £3 to have BT surf together. Also its only 1p per min during the day, though I'm not sure if the BT minimum call charge of 5p still applies. I used to have Tesco as my best friend on friends & family (sad or what). I've now changed that to my mum and tried to put the LineOne number on the list for daytime use. Only it didn't work and the BT lady said its a barred number as it's already discounted. Blimmin' cheek if you ask me, what's the point in offering reductions on frequently used numbers if they're not allowed. Ho Hum. No it wasn't difficult to swap over. From the web site I clicked on a down load thingy (sorry, but I'm not up with the techie stuff) and it automatically set up a new connection in my Dial Up Networking settings. The worse bit was getting yahoo groups to recognise the new email address. I couldn't work out how to just replace one with the other as the Tesco accounts seems indelibly linked to my Yahoo user account. I did eventually work out how to send and receive egroup stuff on the new account. I've kept my Tesco email account and LineOne now downloads mail to me on both my email addresses. They only thing I can't do connected to LineONe is to send emails on the Tesco account. Not that I'd want to particularly, but for eg I tried to unsubscribe to a newsletter from a site that I registered with the Tesco address and so it sends it out on the Tesco account. The only way to send that is to disconnect and reconnect using Tesco, or not bother and unsubscribe online at the relevant website.
