My DD was 9#4 oz when she was born at full term and I had her vaginal. I

hardly had any stitches. My twins were 3#10 oz and 4 # 10 oz and they tore me

apart and it took over an hour to sew me up. So I really don't think size

matters

much after that. I will say recovery from a vaginal is much, much better and

ssoooo worth it afterwards. Don't forget too that the ultra sounds are not for

sure right, they can go a pound either way but more so for the smaller size,

when they put those x's on the machine if they are even a hair over it can add

pounds or ounces to your baby, ssooooo I would go with a vaginal unless a

c-section is needed. Also my friends daughter in law in Vermont had a 10#2oz

girl

" all natural " no meds at all, a few months after I had mine and she only had a

couple stitches too :) So I pray for you that you have an easy delivery and

labor and enjoy that beautiful miracle that is coming shortly :)

-Wow Meredith sounds like you have a big baby there. Do you know why

the baby is so big? I had a c-section with my son because he was in

distress and I had a horrible experience with it. I ended up back in

the hospital with an infection and it was really painful. I think it

was worse than open rny. I haven't had a vaginal delivery, but I am

hoping that this one is going to be. Most people that I know who had

big babies had to have a c-section. You should discuss this with

your Dr. I am sure he should know by now what he plans on doing.

Whatever happens, it will all be worth it for that beautiful baby!!

Good luck!

Meredith,

I have had 2 c-sections. My first was an emergency c-section. With the

secound baby I was planning a vaginal birth (VBAC), but due to my cervix

never thinning out, and having excess amniotic fluid I had a repeat

c-section. When I have another baby I will definetly have a c-section. My

philosphy is whatever way is safest for my baby and doesn't compromise their

healthi s the way for me. Definetly the recovery time with a c-section is

longer, but you also do not go thru labor. For me the recovery of c-sections

was easier than an open RNY. But, the recovery form my RNY wasn't bad

either. Listen to your OB, if he thinks that a c-section is for you, then

maybe that is the way to go. Although, my friend delivered a 10lb baby that

was 2.5 weeks early. When the US showed the baby measuring large, she was

induced early, and vaginally delivered her daughter.

Best wishes and Good luck!

Hi Meredith,

I had a baby that they thought was huge in the u/s, but ended up just being

large 8,12 and 21 in. If there isn't a reasoe that a c/s is Needed, then induce

and deliver vag. It's not talked about much, but labor is really important for

both you and the baby... especialy for the baby. The hormones that are released

help the baby adjust to the outside world, and the contractions help get the

babys system going. If for some reason you agree with the drs that a c/s is

Needed, if at all possible try to labor for a while first. I know it probably

seems nuts to go thru that effort.. but it's really worth it.

Unfortunetly I am not a medical professional, so plese get in touch with someone

that can help explain this to you. A certified Nurse Midwife(CNM) would be a

great person to talk with about this.

BTW, my dd was induced at 36.5 weeks- labor was just 6 hrs from first

contraction to delivery, and was a " natural " birth. To be honest I'm not crazy

about inducing... but it has to be better then a c/s, if you are possitive about

the date of your preg! All in all it wasn't bad. And I got a beautiful little

girl! Yee!

Make sure when you are working with the Lactation Consultant or nurses with

feedings to let them know or remind them that your little bundle was a litte bit

early, that might let them notice any little things that might need a bit of

help. It's better to see them early then try to deal with them later! :o)

Anyway, I hth's- Get some rest, try to walk when you can, and try to cherish

these next few days. They are some of my favorite memories... getting so

excited about the litte one to come!

~ :)

Meredith,

In response to 's post. Labor is MUCH better for the baby.

spent 3 nights in the NICU due to sluggish breathing. My OB saidd it was due

to excess amniotic fluid and the fact that c-section babies don't get the

excess pushed out of them, as vaginally delivered babies due while going

thru the birth canal. Nonetheless, if you can have a vaginal delivery that

is great, if it comes down to the point that for the baby/your health, your

OB will discuss that with you. Although my son spent his first 3 nights in

the NICU, he came home with me and is just fine!

My son was born vaginally and spent 4 days in NICU with the same " wet lung "

problem as your son. The doctor's said it is so uncommon for it to happen with

a vaginal delivery. He was a big boy 9 lb 4 oz and as much pushing as it took,

I couldn't believe there was that much fluid still in his lungs! Just thought

I'd share my experience.

Amber,

Well, I gues it can happen either way ( " wet lung " ). But my OB did say the

same as your DR. with it being common for c-section babies. Wow, 9lb 4 oz is

a big boy to deliver vaginally. Thanks for sharing Amber!

:)

With my Daughter Born 9-12-03, I had an ultrasound the day just before they

induced me.. ( I was almost 42 weeks, and Had low fluid around her) they told

me she was about 8 pounds.... My labor never progressed, and I ended up having

a c-section.. She was Born only weighing 6 lbs 15oz... SO ultrasound weights

aren't always right on target!!

" Wet lung " is most common in C-section births because the fluid is

usually pushed out of the lungs as the baby travels down the birth

canal during a vaginal delivery.

Congratulations on your new baby.

Hi Meredith.. I read your message and wanted to write back.. GO FOR

THE C-SECTION!! I healed faster than my bestfriend who went natural

4 days before me!! But then I got reading the great responses.. and

it has even CHANGED my mind.. I will be going VBAC..

But just so you know... If you have to have an c-section, don't be

afraid of recovery.. just follow the rules that we do with the RNY..

WALK, WALK, WALK.. I got out of my bed every few hours to go for a

nice long walk with my baby in her bassinet to show her off.. and I

really did myself a great thing.. I was healed in no time..

Also I agree with the other responses about the weight of the baby

from and u/s.. sometimes they are right on the money.. other times

they are REAL off.. My ultrasound said 3 horus before the birth,

that she was 5lbs 3oz. She was 8lbs 2oz. So hopefully your baby is

a little smaller, and makes it through the birth canal quickly and

with no help! Best of luck!
