Far better to be too wide than too narrow. Dr Mosca uses non-adjustable bars

that are actually very wide (Kai had an 11 inch bar and 8 inch shoulders)

because he found for *his* patients it was better tollerated. Now, I personally

never liked it, but Kaid did not seem to mind a bit :)

DBB width

Hello all!

Well, Kaitlin went back into the DBB on Monday. Not a peep, not a

tear. The bar didn't bother her. She slept fine. When I took the shoes off this

am her heels were really, really red. It took a few hours for them to fade to

pink. I tried to get in with the Ortho that our new doctor (Frick) uses but

they were out of town until Friday. So I looked in the phonebook to find a

shop that takes our insurance and would see her today. I took her to Metrolina

Orthotics and they said that all of her problems were caused because her bar is

too wide.? They narrowed her bar ALOT. They said that the center bolts are

supposed to be even with the shoulders, not her heels. She cried and I argued.

But it was pointless. They ignored the fact that you can watch her heel slide

all around in the shoe and said she would be fine. They refused to pad her

heels more. She does have the plastizote in one shoe but the back is cut out

of the other.

I widened the bar back as soon as we got home. I know this was

recently mentioned but just for my own piece of mind...did I do the right thing

by

widening the bar to put her heels even with her shoulders? The ortho says that

the redness is from her trying to pull her heels to the rested position

against the bar and that if it is narrowed she won't have to fight the bar. If

that was the case then why would she cry with a narrowed bar?

Just looking for reassurance or direction from ya'll

Thanks in advance!

Just curious, what is the risk is the bar is too narrow? I just widened

Everett's bar the other day, I hadn't realized how much he had grown. Now he's

getting stuck everywhere he tries to crawl! LOL!

I've heard everyone say that the inside edges of the heels should be even

with the shoulders, so if your daughter is more comfortable that way, I

don't see a problem. But, I have heard others say that their orthotist says

the shoulder width should be even with the heel screw holes, and I also read

this same thing from the Orthotic place in Iowa that works with Dr. P.

Personally, my son is more comfortable measuring from the heel screw holes,

so that is what I use. When I tried to widen the bar so the inside edges of

his heels were even with his shoulders, he cried and screamed until I moved

it back, which I did right away.

You absolutely did the right thing. The distance between the heels is supposed

to be shoulder width. Rose has the unadjustable bar and it increases in 2 inch

increments. I think she has the 10 inch bar now, although it may be the 12

inch. Whichever one it is, she does just fine. The problem is if the space

between the bar is to narrow, it hurts their legs and hips and makes them very

uncomfortable.

About her heels being really red, Rose's heel was very red right at first,

although she never complained. Eventually it got better. I think it was just

her heel moving into position stretching the skin and also the shoe is stiff

there and had to adjust to her newly formed heel. By the way, even though I can

see Rose's tenotony scar, and she still has lots of loose skin, I cannot tell by

looking at her heels which one is different. Her heel formed perfectly.
