Hi,

Well so glad to hear that you are on the other side of all the problem with

the hip and at least have a good explanation of what happened and a brand

new chance to get your life back............ My wishes are with you to have

a quick recovery of the hip situation and resolution of whatever this fever

business is.........not good that sort of thing.........if only from the

mystery part.........

All the best and I hope of here of rapid progress in the future,

Glad you are doing better, but am certain the group would be

interested in your history.

Could you give us some more info about your problems? When was your

surgery? Who did it? What prosthesis was used? Was the femoral

part cemented? What was your doc's explanation of the cause of your

failure?

We are all relieved that the " worst case scenario " had a good

resolution. Take care

I'm the other " failure " to whom Jan referred. I had the Conserve Plus implant

where I'm pretty sure Jan had the Corin 2000 implant. Both our doctors made the

same comment about the bones being mushy and the femoral implants coming right

off in their hands.

So I guess that only goes to show that it is more an individual thing and not so

much device or doctor related. Of course, it could be a Midwestern thing since

my doctor in Ohio and Jan's doctor in Illinois both practice in the Midwest.

In answer to your other questions, I had my resurfacing surgery in 12/02 and my

revision in 12/03. Jan, I believe, had her resurfacing surgery in 10/02 and her

revision in 12/03. That leads me to believe that if you're going to suffer our

fates, you'll do so in the first year with the onset of symptoms starting

anywhere from 6 - 9 months. By 12 months it becomes unbearable, and you begin

longing for revision surgery. Most likely the blood circulation is disturbed at

the time of surgery, but it takes that long for the bone to die and begin

collapsing under the cap. I can't speak for Jan, but it was a risk I was told

about at the time I scheduled my resurfacing surgery.

December 30 and came home January 3. I am an official resurfacing

failure as I knew deep in my heart. Just like ph, who I have been

talking with a lot, I had developed AVN under the cap. The doc said

that it came off in his hand and was fragmented and mushy. The cup was very

sturdy and he said that he could have picked me up by it with no

trouble. I received a large head THR. Doc didn't like calling it that

though. He called it something else but I can not remember what it was.

I woke up easily and felt pretty good, so much better than before. The

surgery took 1.5 hours. The horrible pain was gone and the usual

soreness and some pain was there. This surgery probably went better

for me becasue I was a bit more prepared and the cup did not have to be

replaced...thank God for that. I think that I am going to fly back from

this much easier, but then I developed some other complications. It

just seems that I have a black cloud over my head. I have been having a

fever on and off for the past couple of months that comes and goes. The

family doc there ran a bunch of tests including bloodcultures, and

heart ultrasound. That was clear, but he wants me to follow up with

ultrasound of gallbladder and liver as my liver enzymes were also quite

elevated. (maybe from taking ibuprofen up the wazzu over the last

year). doc said fever and elevated liver enzymes could indicate

gallbladder problems even though I have no symptoms. My entire family

has had their gallbladder removed so maybe that is it. I am sick of

these fevers. They range from 99 to 102 every night and now since the

surgery it has also been during the day. Anyway....my leg is now much

longer than the other but will be evened up when I have the other done.

Of course I am no longer a good candidate for resurfacing so I will

have the same on the other hip. I am glad that this part is over and

that I see that I will be pain free in this hip. It has not even been

a week and I am doing so much more than before. I am cooking and doing

dishes (against my fiance's protests) I do have great confidence, as

does my doc, that this hip will give me as long a life as the

resurfacing. The only real negative is if it does need to be revised. I

don't think that it will. I have faith. This has to go my way this

time....it just has too. Jan aka Wannie

hey, that really sucks that you and ph had to

redo surgery on your hips, I hope the new ones give

you no pain for life. JEff
