With Steffi it was fairly obvious from quite early on - around 10mo-1

year although I read somewhere they don't really show dominance until

18m+.

I've also read something about which way they tend to turn their head

when asleep being an indicator too but that could be an old wives'

tale.

My southpaws used their left hands when they began picking up toys and

reaching out, so by nine months I was fairly sure and by 15 mths, certain.

Can we go back to the thread about and Steffi being twins born to

separate parents? was

definitely predominantly LH form around 10mo - although everyone would tell me

as he sat there doing

everything with his LH that there was no way it developed until 18 months - 2

years!

I know at playgroup (from 2y 9mo) with DD2 they were always careful to

put pencils/crayons down in front of children - so they picked them up

themselves.

Hi Jo, I heard that you can tell if your child will be left or right handed

by giving them a toilet roll to look through and which ever eye they hold

the toilet roll to (right or left) indicates which they are. Sounds bizarre

doesn't it, and I have absolutely no idea where I heard this!

I did read somewhere that dominance is established by 3 years old.

Certainly my youngest age nearly 3 is " mostly " left-handed but he does

occassionaly use his right hand. Also if I give him his spoon to feed

himself in his right-hand, then he will use that hand, but given a

choice he will use his left-hand. So I can't actually say that he is

definately left-handed yet, although I stronly suspect he is.

When they get old enough to hold a crayon, place it in the middle of

the table and see which hand reaches for it. I was told that it's

important not to assume they will be righthanded and put the crayon

into their hand. DS dithered for ages before finally settling for

left handed when he was about 3. OTOH, Carys is only 2.5 but is

definitely right handed, just does not even think about using spoons,

crayons etc with her left.

then he is only 10 months!!!

Ah but I heard on Radio 4 (so it must be true!) that those people who

cannot tell their left from their right (like me!) are right-handed

and left-eyed (or vice versa). Even now when someone says turn right

I have to check which hand has no rings on!! The left hand having all

my rings on - don't dare to wear one on right hand as that would

really confuse me!!

LOL! Perhaps that means he will be only communicating by e-mail and

has no intention of writing as it will be old-fashioned by then.

My niece (now 11) was very left handed when under 2 to the extent of freaking my

Mum out. She is now right handed.

DS1 is left-handed, from under a year. DD and DS2 are both right and DS3 has

been very left handed since he could hold things, but we reserve judgement on

him.

DH and I are both right handed and have no relatives that we know of (except an

ex SIL so I don't think she counts!) who are LH.

In DS1's class of 28, 9 are left handed!!

Yes that would follow with me too. I know I walked at just under 9

months old and didn't crawl at all. Interesting.
