Guest guest
Tom, I just had a revision which I talked about in the last issue due to AVN. I must say that I made some progress in the beginning but it never did become pain free and my ROM was not very good due to pain....even though I stretched gently. There was always a pain deep inside and this pain would radiate down my leg and down my shin. It was horrible. This progressed to a stabbing pain that would make me see stars at about ten months. The hip became stiffer. I told the doc it was time to get to the bottom of the pain. First he ordered an MRI and a bone scan. The only thing that was shown was inflammation. The next step was a cortisol shot (that hurt like hell) and he said that if I received any relief from this shot then the pain was in the hip. If there was no relief a back problem must be looked at. The relief could come anywhere from immediately to 48 hours and it could have even solved the problem depending on what it was. Of course it took me 48 hours and that day was probably the best day I had had in a year and a half. I felt what it was like to be pain free and I wanted it. Unfortunately the pain returned the next day. Doc said since there was relief that he wanted to try oral steroids as a last resort. This also gave me one day of relief. Dr. Stachniw took every step possible to discover what the problem was. AVN however, cannot be detected because it is under the cap. The surgery that I had scheduled to do my other hip was used for an exploratory on my already done hip. AVN was discovered and a large ball was used with a somewhat short stem (of course I am 5'2 " and it just may be relative. I am very happy right now and know that this will be the hip I was supposed to have. Of course this is one of the things that can happen with this surgery, but it happens so infrequently that I never gave it a second thought. Recovery has been a breeze compared to the first. I hope that everything turns around for you and I am sure that it will. Ten weeks is just tooooo early for you to assume anything. Do get ahold of your doc and see if he doesn't proceed with the same protocol that my doc did. I wish you the best Jan akaWannie In a message dated 1/5/2004 8:16:06 PM Central Standard Time, surfacehippy writes: Has anyone else had this happen? Is the soft tissue or hip capsule still too weak? The therapist thinks it's nerve damage that needs to heal. I figured by now I'd get some relief. I'm going to call Dr Mont again but wanted to ask fellow hippies if they had any experience with this type of thing. I figured by week 10 I'd be walking fine with no real pain except that around the incision area. It's very frustrating. >>
Guest guest
Tom, Here are my 2 cents: I was told by an OS that pains below the knee are not directly caused by the hip joint but by the nerves from the back. I have a bum back (2 L5-S1 fusions over the last 25 years). I had all kinds of pains in the upper and lower leg before my hipresurf about 7 wks ago. Especially in the shin area and a stabbing pain just below the knee cap. This is the sciatic nerve (L4 part I believe). These pains were mostly when lying in bed. I believe that tingling in the foot is the L5 part of the sciatic nerve. Anyway, in my case these pains in bed are gone now . Probably the constricted movement of the hip used to put pressure on my already sensitive back aggrevating the nerve pinching. (I still have back pains but not radiating down). Even though Wannie's situation (below) was different some of her symptoms sound so similar to mine that I wonder if her " loose hip cup " was causing problems in her back area. Now coming back to you, I was thinking along the same lines: pain from the back resulting from things you are doing or not doing because of the hip rehab. I certainly hope so. Time will tell. Back strenghtening exercises might help. Keep faith; there are many stories on this board where the overall-success-story is marred with " minor " setbacks and misfortunes. I am sure they are not so minor when you're in the middle of them, but the final outcome is still what counts. Strength and speedy recovery. Ed Mont rC+ 11/03 P.S. BTW, you are a few wks ahead of me: I still have 4wks to go with 2 crutches. > > --- wannie2@a... wrote: > Tom, > I just had a revision which I talked about in the last issue due to AVN.
