For Joyce Graves: I contacted LA Ortho Hospital and the JRI today. If you are in

USA, Info on contact and website is:

Chuck

Executive Director

Joint Replacement Institute at Orthopaedic Hospital

2400 S. Flower Street

Los Angeles, CA 90007

, extension 1888

(fax)

email: cadams@...

www.jri-oh.com

Chuck exhausted me providing info and answering questions. He sent me four

med papers of explanation, study results, etc. Suggest you check this out if you

are interested. I'm just beginning the process and am at least 4-8 wks away from

surgery, if I decide to do now rather than wait until I return from Scotland

trip in Jul. However, Chuck said all things being equal and if I have

normal results experienced in study to date (i. e., no unexpected complications

(dislocation, infection, etc)), it's possible I could have procedure--boy, they

hate to call it surgery, don't they--in Apr and be recuperated in time for late

Jun trip.

Hope this info helps.

Hi Joyce. I too was very leary about holding onto as much bone as possilbe -

cutting off the top of a perfectly good femur seemed very drastic to me. It

wan't until I stumblee upon resurfing that I saw some hope for an alternative.

My Os didn't even mention it so I sat on a THR waitlist for two years, thinking

that was the only way out of the excruciating pain. Luckily I found this site,

discovered Dr De Smet, and had it done 4 months ago. It is wonderful to be in

no pain. I am recovering more slowly than the younger active members of this

forum, being 59, but I expected that. Not to mention the enforced sedenteary

life I have had to lead for the past 5 years. Find an OS who does resurfs and

is enthusiastic about them, let him/her look at your xrays to see if you are a

good candiddate, and then decide. Good luck

upcoming surgery

Dear Folks. I just saw an OS today and am scheduled for Total Hip Replacement

in February. I asked him about Resurfacing. He doesn't do it and really

dismissed it as having " been around for 25 years, not many surgeons do it

because it doesn't last. " That seemed to be his main criticism of it. So, I

signed up for THR. Now, my question to all of you: Tell me, if you would, what

you think of your resurfacing experience. Do any of you have any basis for

comparing resurfacing to THR? If so, which do you think is the " best? " I mean:

pain gone, mobility restored, occurrence of dislocating hip, and recovery times.

I just like the idea of holding onto as much of my own bone as possible.

Which is one reason why resurfacing seems more appealing to me.

Feedback, please... Thanks.
