hi all, it's been forever since i've posted. kelby turned 3 in

august and has been doing fine with his shoes at night until he

recently cut his heel and for the first time ever...he couldn't wear

his shoes at night. he didn't wear them for about 4 days. needless

to say, ever since then it has been a MAJOR battle to do his shoes

at night. he got used to getting up in the morning and coming in to

our room to get in to bed with us, now he can't climb over the gate

with his shoes on. right now he is in bed hysterically screaming " i

don't want my ni-ni shoes " . any ideas/help from parents who've been

thru this with an older child? how are we going to make it to 4

y.o.? he's 40 lbs and so hard to carry to the bathroom, how are we

going to do this another year? thanks for any help.

Hi Tia-

My heart goes out to you and Kelby. You are so close to completion though

that there has to be some answers for you. I know Charity on this board who

has Trenton, who just turned 4, used to put his shoes on him after he went

to bed. Maybe you could give that a try. Perhaps you could try and award

system. Where he gets a sticker on chart every time he doesn't argue to put

his shoes on and after so many he gets a special treat or little toy. We did

this with our non clubfoot child who refused to sleep in hs bed all night

and it worked like a charm. You need to distiquish why he doesn't want them

on. Is he uncomfotable now that he knows what it is like to sleep with

" free " feet or is it that he has lost freedom to get up in the morning and

go to your room. My almost 2 1/2 yr old used to be an AWESOME sleeper but

since he was tranistioned to a bed he wakes up every morning at 3:00 and

crawls to the gate and cries. He is upset that he can't come into our room

when he awakens. He has been doing this for about a month now and it has

nothing to do with the shoes, just the gate. We haven't been able to start

the award system with him yet because he doesn't quite comprehend that yet.

I hope there are others out there who can offer you some more advice.
