Guest guest
Hi Shirley Armour and the other natural thyroid brands are dosed in grains, or mg.... 1 grain of Armour is the same as 60 mg. (there are a couple of other brands that have 65 mg to the grain, but the dose of hormones is still the same. Synthetic thyroid meds.... Like Synthroid and the others... are dosed in mcg or mg Many folks get confused with the dosing.. It took me a LONG time to get the hang of it.... 100 mcg is the same as .01 mg If you are trying to compare Armour to a synthetic, like Synthroid... 1 grain of Armour contains 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3 T3 is four times more potent than T4 (the 'biological equivalency') so after you do all the math involved.. 1 grain of Armour equals 74 mcg of Synthroid. But... I know I'm confusing the heck out of you now.... Some folks do well on the synthetics and others don't... so synthetic and natural do not work the same way in all folks the same way.... I'm gonna be quiet now... hehehehe Topper () On Wed, 27 Sep 2006 23:23:14 -0000 " Shirley Gray " writes: > My doctor has me on a dose of 90 mcg Armour thyroid twice a day for a > total of 180 mcg. Guest guest
Thanks, Topper. I looked again at my prescrition bottle and it is mg. Since I am on 180 mg per day, that woud be 3 grams, right? Can you tell me how that compares to the 150 mcg Synthroid I was previously on? It's so confusing. I'm very impressed with your knowledge. Thanks again for your help. I really enjoy this site and I'm learning a lot. Guest guest
Actually, my PCP had just reduced my Synthroid from .175 to .150. I am losing hair and my always dry, sensitive skin is much worse. My new doctor started me out at 60 mg daily for a week, increasing weekly by 30 mg to my current 3 grams. I have now been on the 3 grams for 10 days and I've noticed that my shower drain is no longer stopped up with hair and my brushes are retaining much less hair. My skin hasn't shown much change and a chronic fungal rash at pressure points on my torso has actually been worse. This happens from time to time as it seems to run in cycles and is aggravated by sweating. I have no side effects from the increase and plan to continue at my current level for another two weeks and then consult my doctor. I had asked my PCP to try me on Armour last year and he refused. Can you tell me why doctors are so resistant to Armour? Thanks, Shirley > > It is confusing... so don't worry about asking questions.. once it clicks > in your brain it starts making more sense.. then you get to help the new > folks that come after you..... *smile* > > 180 mg is 3 grains, that's right.... > > 150 mcg Synthroid would be equal to about 2 grains Armour.... > > The doc actually started you on a higher dose of Armour than... well.. > than your body might be happy with. > > How long have you been on the 3 grains and how long were you on the 150 > mcg of Synthroid? > > What tends to/might happen is that your body will have a bit of a shock > adjusting to the direct T3 in the Armour... the doc has you splitting > the dose, taking 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 later in the day.. that's > good... > > We've got a page set up on the website that runs through the basics of > the meds, labs and such if you want to run through that.... > www.thyrophoenix.com/thyroid_101.htm > > Do you have copies of your labs that you could share with us? Guest guest
I had asked my PCP to try me on Armour last year and he refused. Can you tell me why doctors are so resistant to Armour?//////////// Well...my endo says it's cause she doesn't know the exact amounts of T4/T3 in Armour whereas with the synthetics you can precisely titrate the amounts and know what you're giving. Yada yada...I'll go with that as long as the synthetic is working for me, which it seems to be at the moment. She moved me from the .1mg of Synthroid to a .112mg (I think!) of Levoxyl. I've been on it for about 4 weeks now and I *think* I'm starting to see an improvement. I have a bit more energy in the afternoons and I'm sleeping a little more soundly. Also---the hair on the outer edge of my eyebrows is growing back in!!!! ____________________________ in *cool again* Jerseyopen proximal rny 9/18/015'9"-31yo297/168I'm not a doc-in real life or otherwise. Guest guest
Thanks to all of you who responded to my post. I am learning a lot. I'm just so pleased that my hair loss has slowed. I've had this fungal thing which comes and goes and is worse in summer. After having seen several of the best dermatologists in Dallas. one finally put me on a course of Nizoral which definitely lessened the severity of the attacks, but he said it was dangerous to do a second course so I've been using the Nizoral topical cream which helps but does not cure. I will try the grapefruit seed extract and see if that helps. It is amazing how well versed on the subject of thyroid all of you are. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will go back to my lurking and learning for now. Guest guest
Basically , your doc just told you she is too lazy to look up the information. It's not like it's some deep, dark secret. But to answer the other person's question, most doc's don't like Armour because they've been brainwashed by the synthetic makers that their medication is the best and they offered vacations and other free stuff for prescribing their brand of synthetic. Synthetics work just fine for a lot of folks, but not for everyone. Armour works jnust fine for a lot of folks, but also, not for everyone. Armour has been around for over 100 years and a lot of docs don't even know it's still being made and they tend to think of "old" medications as not as effective as the "new" meds. Unfortunately, as a lot of folks who took the fen/phen combo, or Vioxx or Bextra found out, new isn't always better.Willyorca wrote: I had asked my PCP to try me on Armour last year and he refused. Guest guest
Make SURE you use the grapefruit seed extract with water or some sort of liquid, I wouldn't put it in milk tho, that'd just be wrong. The stuff is pretty strong. SpiffShirley Gray wrote: Thanks to all of you who responded to my post. I am learning a lot. I'm just so pleased that my hair loss has slowed.
