See I have issues with that.

I don't pray a lot and I am a bit of a devout agnostic so I am not really

" into " all that.

I don't like " faking it " for the Patient's benefit as I think I am being a

hypocrite to those times when I do get in a " mood " to have a conversation

with whomever it is I am speaking to at those times when I get in that

" mood " I kind of take those moments pretty seriously (to be frank they are

usually low points of my life) as I am usually very much in the " mood " at that

moment in time.

I have done it and reconcile it to making my Patient feel better in their

head if nowhere else.

This is one of those very intense personal issues for all of us as humans I

think.

I think there is I have not only prayed for help on tough calls I have

prayed with patients At their request, no matter your belief there can

often be comfort in prayer both for you and your patient as they say

" there are no atheiests in foxholes " genericly speaking of course!

I am not able to start a new thread from my blackberry for some reason, but this

topic is suitable for my post. I believe in the power of prayer, but respect a

patient's right to not have me impose my beliefs upon them.

My service suffered a great loss today. Ron ston, a friend and employee,

died today, apparently by his own hands. He did not arrive at work as

scheduled(never happens), he did not answer phone calls, and when an off-duty

supervisor went to his home, his body was discovered. I am asking for the

prayers of everyone to help my team of kind and loving professionals cope with

this terrible loss, as well as for Ron's family. I already have a cisd

scheduled, but the days ahead will be hard for all involved, and we will all

miss him.

If I ever have a " tough call " , I'll consider that. But in the last three

decades, I have yet to have that " tough call " .

Who mocked anyone? I just said I have never run a call in my career that I felt

was " tough " enough -- emotionally or otherwise -- to require divine

intervention. And my opinion was asked for just like yours was, so it is just

as valid. Before you go demanding respect, perhaps you should lead by example.

Well as a Chaplain and Paramedic for a transfer service, I see religion and

prayer as an important topic to consider. Many of our patients that need the

prayers, are in their older ages and have more devout set beliefs. In that they

believe int he power of prayer more than that of todays youth and modernist. It

has never hurt to just pray a Lords Prayer, or Psalm 21. If the patient feels

better and it helps them to relax, then would that then make them a less

critical patient becuase now they are not adding stress to themselves or to the

crew. Many of the patients I deal with are End - Stage or Hospice Care

patients. They know that they are close to dying, and if they need me to help

them to prepare for the Sacrament of Death, should I not then listen to their

Reconciliation and bless them?

dang, son! you've had a quiet life then. In *my* 35 plus years in the

field, I figure I had at least one tough call a quarter...Of course, for the

last 20 odd years, I've been the one who often has had to go in and tell a

family that their loved one didn't make it....

My prayer was more on the order of " Let me do my best for this patient and

family " rather than for direct miraculous intervention, but there were

still plenty of tough calls where the patient or family needed prayers for

*their* comfort. About the only time I remember directly praying *over*

patients, were for those still-born infants where, as provided by law and

custom,

I provided a baptism for the family's comfort.

Do you feel like prayer truly helped you with those calls? I've had plenty

of challenging patients and situations. I've just never had what I would

call a " tough call " that stressed me so much that I felt compelled to seek

divine intervention.

I was just going to say the same thing. But someone always has to do it. Now for

the next 3 weeks we will have a running gun battle over religion.
