Hi Sandy, If I get a reading of 131 that does not bother me. I know I have diabetes and I'm not going to get perfect readings every time. I have a friend that drinks a cup of coffee with sugar and it is not unusual for her to get a reading of 125. She does not have diabetes, she is tested often. I get readings of 140 and occasionally higher. I have been testing since 1999 and I know that my meter is not always accurate. A meter can be off by as much as 20%. I test but I don't rely on those tests as much as I do the A1c. As long as my A1c stays where it is now, I don't worry. Diabetes is something you will live with the rest of your life. Don't become so tied to your meter and your choice of foods that you let diabetes control you. hugs Eunice Quote

Hi Sandy, Somewhere in the archives is a message about how I got off meds. I will find it tomorrow and post it. Does your body adjust and metabolize carbs better as years go on? I think it does for me or it seems to. I'm eating more and having to exercise less. hugs Eunice Quote

Guest guest Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 Eunice, do you think the loss of weight and exercise is what makes your body adjust? I was diagnosed in August 2005 and I could not touch any breads, potatoes, or rice without a reading of 180 or more. Now, I have my BS under much better control, have lost a few pounds, and exercise for 20 minutes about 30 minutes after each meal (most of the time). I have been able to eat foods that I could not eat at first and have a reading of less than 120 at two hours. Jimmie In a message dated 1/2/2006 9:19:23 P.M. I probably do more exercise (activity) than a lot of people. I'm one of these people that cannot sit down for long spells. If I do, I get tired, sleepy, no energy, so I'm always doing some type of activity - cleaning house, re-arranging furniture, yardwork in the spring/summer/fall. We live in the country and it is a nice walk to our mailbox and I do that 2 or 3 times a day (never know what time the mail carrier will come by). I also walk down through our woods or along the road. At night, I do eat less carbs because I don't do much exercise after dinner. I'm usually on the computer for a longer period of time. hugs Eunice Quote
Guest guest Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 Thank you Eunice - that is really something I needed. I guess I'm ok with anything under 140 if I know I've had more carbs than usual - when it gets over 140 I get upset (which I know is silly) and as time goes on, it probably won't upset me so much. I get my next A1c the first week in February - it was 10.1 in November and I have had it well controlled (aside from 2 or 3 150 readings) since the first week after dx in Nov. so I'm rather anxious to see what this next A1c is (especially since my doc said he will take me off my medication and see how I do without it if it is " normal " ). I'd love to know how you started out and how you got such good control with diet and exercise. I want to be able to do this at least for a few years being only 43 . . . . . but when I get a bit higher readings with all that I do and my really strict diet, I wonder if I'll be able to go off them and stay off them (I'm only on Amaryl 2 mg). Wish I could get lower readings with just cleaning the kitchen! Does your body adjust and metabolize carbs better as years go on? I thought it generally got harder to control? If I ran to my meter every time I ate I would consider myself a slave to it. My Dr. told me not to worry unless I had a reading over 150 and it stayed high. I eat almost anything I want but watch the portions and no real sugar (except on rare occasions) Hugs, Tres > > > Quote

Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 See this is where I get confused (and accused of being too strict) - I hear people saying that every single reading over 140 is doing damage. So I think geez, if 3 or 4 times a week, I get a reading over 140, then I'm doing continuous (sort of) damage and I worry which is why I feel I have to check after all meals (running to the meter) But then I hear others say if they get a higher reading - as long as it doesn't last long . . . then they don't worry about it - or their doctors tell them not to worry about it. So what is actually SAFE or is this like everything else where there really is no answer? I get so exasperated with the conflicting things it can drive one crazy. I want to be more relaxed about this as I have a long time ahead of me but on one hand it is check all the time and make sure you don't get high readings and it shouldn't be over 140 or you are doing damage . . . and on the other, it is not to worry if you get ocassional (what is ocassional?) high readings.
