Feedback on U.S. Surgeon's Comments about Resurfacing.

Thought I would ask for feedback on comments I received (via email -

I've never met nor spoken to this Illinois surgeon) on resurfacing.

Obviously most in the group would disagree, but I'd be interested to

hear the specific repudiations of each point he makes.

" This procedure has found some favor in younger patints needing hip

replacement and has been advertised as being more bone sparring than

conventional hip replacement. It has been fraught with numerous

problems, including early loosening, femoral neck fracture and

development of avascular necrosis of the remaining bone.

At this time there are only a few people in the country who advocate

it for primary THA. Dr Amstutz in Los Angeles, and Dr. Mont in

baltimore have the largest series. I have forwarded some patients to

these people who were interested in surface replacement. To date I

must say the pain relief and functional capabilities I obtain with

conventional THA run circles around resurfacing. "

Feedback please!

Well, I won't say he is absolutely wrong. Most of the company's

sponsored studies are biased for sure. 9 out of 10 doctors will

advise what he told you.

However, it depends on you. Resurfacing might be successful if you

are the right candidate for it. Read, read and decide. Remember, any

public forum might be biased too for any particular institution or

outfit as it is free for all.
