Guest guest
The Acrobat Reader American document is from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and concerns the 25 year results after cemented Charnley THR in patients less than 50 years old. It is an investigation performed at the University of Iowa Hospitals etc. Why post the results on this site may you ask! Well in the not to distant past a discussion on cementation took place and this report gives factual information. The cement used will have changed but for the better. The following is part of the text but the 7 page report should be read in its entirety. Survivorship Analysis Of the original ninety-three prosthetic hips, sixty-four (69%) were functioning at the latest follow-up evaluation or at the time of death of the patient. Of the sixty hips in the living patients, thirty-eight (63%) were functioning with the index prosthesis in place at least twenty-five years after placement. I know we believe Resurfacing to be better but for those who have to have a THR or those who are worried about cement then this report is good news - remember these were done in the 70's. Message to Chuck : Charnley again Chuck! He was certainly a knowledgeable OS. He didn't get everything right but a lot of people owe him an awful lot. Both THR & Resurfers.
