I am from Detroit I went to Dr. at St. Clair Orthopedics at St. s

on 8 Mile for the last 20 years he does not do resurfacing nor does he

recommend it. I was in an examining room for my 1 year follow up since I had

gone to

him for so many years actually Dr. Richert and Dr. before Dr. and

he refused to see me I was actually in the room and he wouldn't come in to see

me because he didn't do the surgery. ( I will not go back to St. Clair Ortho

for another thing). I also went to Henry Ford on the Boulevard to see Dr.

Verner who is the head of Orthopedics he doesn't do it either but he did

recommend hip resurfacing. I also went to Dr. Green at Beaumont Royal Oak

he

didn't recommend it either.

After 1 year of research I ended up at Dr. Mont in Baltimore thanks to this

board. I had hip resurfacing surgery 4/11/02 I am doing very well.

I f you care to email me direct feel free to do so.

I'm from Ann Arbor and had a resurfacing with Dr. Gross in Columbia,

South Carolina. Gross has done over 250 resurfacings, and last fall, I

had not heard of anyone who had done any resurfacings in the Detroit

area. My understanding is not to go to anyone unless they had done

at least 35 resurfacings. I would ask Silverton how many resurfacings

he has done.

Your Doctor could be refering to the Hemi-resurfacing which is only

half of the procedure (femoral side).

I recently went to the Medical site and recieved the list for

all local surgeons who do the resurfacing within 200 miles of

Detroit. I called Doctor DeSantis, listed below, to verify that he

does resurfacing and I could not get a straight answer with the

people in his office. They told me that I would have to set an

appointment. I was calling for information for my identical twin who

probably needs the surgery some time this year or early next year.

Also, Dr DeSanits does take HAP HMO.

Hi,

I think I would be challenging the assumption that you don't go to anyone

who hasn't done at least 35 resurfacing...... They all had to start

somewhere and with people I notice they try very much harder to get it right

when they do the first few dozen of anything - be that even changing the oil

in the car..........

The manufacturers of these devices have pretty high standards from what I

can gather and so at this point I couldn't imagine any donkey getting to put

in this new product............especially one with as much hope resting on

it as a Resurface gaining entry into US seems to have. All the doctors I

have heard mentioned in Australia doing it are amongst the best and one's

more concerned about giving their patients the best opportunities at a

better life........... From little I know, where experience really counts,

is if you have a difficult situation that is touch and go resurface

wise...........then the pros who have been around the block a few times

appear to just do it where the newbies are more reluctant to have a

go.......... Now that could be for better or worse long term if you stop and

think about it...........

Just my thoughts..........

From Toledo, Ohio, sixty miles south of Detroit. Had Dr. Mont of

Baltimore do my resurfacing, 2/23/01. I couldn't have made a better

decision. Baltimore is a little over an hour flight from DTW. Go

with the best.

Hi Tammy,

I had a similar experience just trying to locate a surgeon to do my followup

when I finally get my resurfacing done. I saw the OS who had initially told me

to wait as long as I could, but that I would know when it was time to do a THR.

Since my x-rays were over a year old, I wanted to have new ones to send to Dr.

Amstutz when I decided to go the resurfacing route, and I wanted to acquaint him

with the surgery so that he could do my followup when the time came. I had

brought him a copy of Dr. Amstutz's preliminary draft of the article just

published, and he refused to even look at it! Then he told me I could have my

" new surgeon " take any x-rays needed. I finally did get the x-rays taken at his

office, but he refused to see me afterward to discuss them with me! The upside

is that one of his partners was much more intellectually curious. She discussed

the films with me, asked for a copy of the research findings to date, and agreed

to do my followup post-op. So, even in the same group practice, there can be a

huge difference in the open-mindedness of US docs.

The resurfacing they more than likely do is the TARA by Biopro out of

Port Huron MI. It's totally FDA approved but not metal on metal.

Rather it comes as Ceramic to Poly or Metal to Poly. It's been around

since the Wagner device. A Dr Townley developed it and had nearly 70%

failure within 5-6 years. They apparently offered no appologies that

I've been able to dig up. And no explainations. Granted they use

different Polyethylene now but it's still got that wear issue.

Dr Mont's number through Sinai Hospital is ask for the

Rubin Institute.

Good luck, Capt Amaze_O (yet another who drove to Baltimore
