Hi, Ren.

My salivary gland pain started two weeks ago, two months after my

second RAI treatment. I have the pain on the right side. I went to my

surgeon and he prescribed Augmentin. I was on it for ten days. It

didn't help. When I went back to him this past Monday, he prescribed

Omnicef. Still no relief. I go back to him in a week and a half. He

has one more antibiotic in mind. Don't know what to do if that one

won't work but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there! In

the meantime, I've been drinking lots of water and alternating heat

and ice in the area.

Keep me posted on what works for you!

Good luck!

Hi Ren,

Do you know for a fact that you do have an infection or could the gland pain

be some thing other then that. About 4 months after my RAI treatment the one

side of my face swelled up. Both the Endo and Ent said that it had nothing to do

with thyca or the treatment. The Ent put me on an antibiotic which of course

did not change things. I had a sialogram done, which showed a stenosis

(narrowing of the glands duct). Only time, massaging, and hard sugar free

candies helped. Good Luck to you.

Augmentin/ antibiotics for salivary gland infections

Hi!

I have been having salivary gland pain for a few weeks now, and

recently my ENT prescribed Augmentin in case of an infection. I was

wondering if anyone else has taken this antibiotic for a salivary

gland infection. If yes, how effective is it? Has anyone taken a

different antibiotic which was effective? Thanks for sharing your

experience.

OOPS. Left some info out from the last post of mine. So any how through this

group and my own research I did find out that my problems did stem from the

RAI. I printed papers and presented it to the ENT to try to make her a believer

and my Endo finally admitted the problems stemmed from the RAI.

Update:After many months the side of my face started looking normal

and the swelling went down, only in time for the other side to flair up. Oh

well!!!!!!!!!!!!

--HI,

I had my RAI on Oct. 8, 2002. I have had salivary gland pain for the

past 4 months. I describe it as eating something very sour and

getting pain under your ear and cheek but the feeling doesn't go

away. I feel it with every bite of my food. Recently I had a bad

flare up so I went to my Surgeon. He said it was definitely from the

RAI. He said that the ducts get scare tissue from the radiation that

goes to the salivary gland after the thryroid tissue is saturated.

The scare tissue makes it difficult for the saliva to go through the

ducts. Do you get a bad taste in your mouth every once in a while?

This is also from the salivary duct. Saliva gets backed up and comes

out suddenly.

He suggested that I not eat foods first that will make my " mouth

water " just by thinking about it. He said to maybe drink a little bit

of warm water first to get my glands ready for the " good Stuff. " He

also said to massage the gland upward from under my ear through the

cheek.

I recently had a sour plum which caused me to have pain again. Now I

have to watch what I eat again.

The good news is that it comes and goes. The bad news is that we have

to deal with it when it does occur.:-(

Every person is different. If you ruled out an infection, it is

probably from the RAI.

If you have any other questions, please contact me.

Good luck to you and all other salivary gland sufferers.

, N.Y.

Hi Ellen:

Prior to Thyca I had several Salivary Gland Infections due to

Sjogrens Syndrome. I have had Keflex,Cipro and sometimes a dose pack

of prednisone to go with it.

Sometimes Keflex doesn't knock the infection so than I get Cipro.

I have never had Augmentin for a Salivary Gland Infection. I did

have it for a sinus infection once.

Hi Laurel,

Thanks for telling me about your salivary gland problems. Judging

by the messages from many of the thyca patients who have had this,

it looks like there are a lot of doctors out there who don't really

know about thyroid cancer and its related issues! Per my doctor, I

don't have an infection yet, but I could get one. That is why he

prescribed the antibiotic. What triggered you to get an antibiotic?

Thanks again for your response,

Ren
