Guest guest Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 Deana Thyroid meds do not " feed " the thyroid itself, they " put it to rest " , hopefully. The problem arises when a person is not ON enough oral hormone to put it to rest. A sick thyroid gland, particularly with Hashimoto's Disease, can have autonomous nodules that make their own separate T3, spit it out at intervals, with inflammation and swelling, and all this confuses the issue, adding to the thyroid hormone that is already being taken. The problem is that it doesn't make this " extra " hormone all the time, it only does it at intervals, then goes back to " rest " , while the antibodies involved slowly destroy it (or quickly with some people; more likely slowly). Taking thyroid meds is not supplementing or feeding the thyroid, it is simply giving the body tissues what they need to survive. During these " ebb and flow " antibody attacks is when the damage is done to the thyroid itself, rendering it incapable of ever again being able to normally produce adequate amts of thyroid hormone. It either becomes a hardened shrunken gland or it becomes a spongy, lumpy mess, with no normal function, inbetween, and when all is said and done. Guest guest Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 Hi Sue, I have Hashi's I have been on armour for apx 10 months. The first dose I was given was 1 grain. I was then upped to 1.5 grains After a tsh reading into hyper stage I was told to go down to 1grain again. I told the doctor pls dont, I am finally feeling better. Can we pls do 1grain and half of the half grain. He said yes so I was on that for about 4 months and I started having severe adrenal gland disfunction (at least that is what it felt like to me- it was either my adrenal or my kidneys but something was causing me to feel like I was dying from the inside out.) I was tested and my antibodies where back up and my tsh was up to almost 22 He then uped me to 2 grains about 8-10 weeks ago. Now just in the past 2 weeks I have finally started to feel good. Although I have days when I have to take extra Astragulas and Eleutherococcus senticosus and vitamins because I feel like my body is starting the dying from the inside out cycle again. The Astragulas and Eleutherococus combo helps tremendously I am leary to go in and get tested because I am feeling better finally after so many years. I still suffer from spina pain from the base of the back of my head down to my lowerback. they say it is fibro but none of the meds help. I wake up alot at night from the pain and even when I take stuff to help me fall asleep I still wake up with tremendous pain but the doctors ALL did tests and can NOT find any reason why I should have spinal pain. I tell em to change bodies with me for a day and will see what they say then. I have lost 8 lbs now since my upped dose to 2grains. I am hoping that is just my bodys orignial metabolism finally getting back in sinc and that this is the right dose. Guest guest Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 Hi Deana, Sorry to hear you have had so much pain in the past and glad to hear you are starting to feel better. When you were on the 1.5 with a TSH in the “hyper” stage did you feel OK, though? I know my TSH has been low out of range in the past and I did not feel hyper... I am just now trying Armour just to see if there’s any difference for me with the synthetic vs. the natural. It just feel soooo weird to me to be taking a pig’s hormone, but I am open-minded to what I have read on this board so am giving it a shot. I have a very dyfuntcional metabolism since I was Dx with Hahsis and Hypo and while I don’t feel sick and my numbers are back to being “great” I wanted to see if Armour can help with the metabolism. I would LOVE to lose 8 lbs, and Lord knows I try. Good for you! Did you start on Armour or switch from a synthetic? Sue Hi Sue, I have Hashi's I have been on armour for apx 10 months. Guest guest Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Hi again Sue, When I was on the 1.5 I was feeling better and wish they woulda just left it alone. Even though I found a doctor who prescribes armour and looks at how I am feeling. He still basis the dose by my TSH test. Unfortunately I may have to just by my own armour if I go in and find out that I am slightly hyper again because 1.5 grains and above is the only time I have felt better. I am not in any hurry to go get my thyroid blood levels because I am feeling so good and they always mess with the dose. I have seen about 6 different doctors in this area for my Hashis and ALL do the same thing instead of basing alot of my dose on how I feel. Like I said earlier before I had thyroid problems I was one of those people with a very high metabolism so I dont think they should be putting all people in one category of numbers. I bet when I was fine, they would a told me I was hyperthyroid - who knows. I switched from 6 years of being on synthetic and having levels within range but feeling like total crap. Guest guest Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Hi Deana, Ok, well then there's hope... I never felt " better " on the levoxyl even with 4 years of tweaking. When we added in the T3 I did get warm hands and feet which was the first noticable thing I got from any thyroid meds but I GAINED weight after starting Levoxyl and that's with adding a 4 to 5 day a week exercise routine and eliminating bad fats, hi glycemic carbs, etc. That is FRUSTRATING. So I asked my doctor if I could try Armour with my last blood results and even though my TSH was " perfect " at .81 and my T3F was high-end range of 291 from 230-420, she said " SURE, try the Armour " and started me on the 1.5 grains this past week! She's an awesome doctor that way. If this doesn't jumpstart my metabolism I dunno what will. I think the Armour goes into your body sooner/different/ more effectively than the synthetic? I am not sure but I feel like I am a bit warmer now but no heart palps or anything else. I guess time will tell. I agree that's it's how you feel but the docs will tell us otherwise Sue > Hi again Sue, > > When I was on the 1.5 I was feeling better and wish they woulda just > left it alone. Guest guest Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Ok, this is in line with what I was going to post: Male, 40's, started on Levothy generic in May 06 after a year of sedintary behavior, not being able to walk more than 1/2 hour without getting wiped out for a few days- , after 3 months no effect, but THS levels down to 4.6 or so. Went OFF the 100, down to 50 again, and it helped get me moving-??? then back to 100 SYNTHROID so I could get OUT and work a little bit- I can do 2-3 days of minor labor, but the 4th day I CRASH bigtime. I am thinking about Armour, - I hear the pigs hormone had helped alot of people.- I told my doctor I was going to apply for SSI, and he said I cant get it because thyroid is 'no big deal' but I cannot hold any kind of steady job, lol, and the synthroid helped, but not the levo, etc etc.... So Armour is the next thing on the list@ Synthroid is helping a little bit, Im 30% functional, but thats NOT ENOUGH!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR I go a bit nuts sometimes, this is like PARKINSONS disease, and time and $$ are running out!! What other meds are available? Levo, Sythroid, Armour....?? Thanks Quote
