Mike,

I sort of feel this way too. Maybe I do fully feel this way but am

battling it in my own mind a little bit better than you now. I don't

know. I don't so much see myself as I was but instead I sometimes find

myself thinking the same bad thoughts from the past like, " will there

be chairs I can fit in " , " how can I walk that far " , " can I find a close

parking spot and not walk far " , even down to " Okay I'm walking, I'm

walking, down a hall at work, here's some people talking, can I sneak

between them or do I have to wait for them to move? " Basically I do not

have an entirely accurate view of my size. But I also don't see myself

at my largest either. I know not much of a good answer.

What I've tried to do is face this crap head on and put myself in

situations, over and over again, that force me to confront these

things. I now park on the far side of the building so I'm becoming more

used to not worrying about how far my car is away from me. I also now

sort of attack chairs to see if I can fit in them. I think I can almost

fit in even the chairs in my kid's school counselor's waiting room. I'm

actually relishing going on a plane flight in a few weeks to see if I

can handle coach class and, more importantly, if the seat belt fits.

I don't really know what the hell I look like in the mirror. I still

look fat in my mind. Technically I am. Technically I'm still morbidly

obese BMI/weight wise. That's strangely reassuring (nuts). I don't ever

feel I haven't lost a pound though.

I might suggest you also talk to other people. I was talking to a co-

worker the other day and just saying that I was a 44 " waist now and

really need to get some 42 " pants now. He said something to the extent

of, " Well heck I'm a 38 inch " as if to say, " Yeah we're basically the

same. " I also talk with people about my working out in the morning and

many say, " Yeah I need to do something like that too. " or they talk

about what they do. It's important to me to hear and see myself as

doing and fitting into things the same as those I view as normal.

I do think my thoughts about how little I've lost and my lack of

success has waned a lot over time but then that's also been offset by

my weight loss slowing and still I'm closer to a normal weight/body now

too. I guess I'd say so long as these thoughts don't occupy your every

thought and interfere with your average day and, most importantly, your

successes at diet and exercise I'd not worry about it. Just keep doing

what you're doing and talking with others about your thoughts. It can

be very cathartic, at least for me.

If it does get to be something that's really bugging you or happens

more often than not then go see a therapist. There are probably some

very easy mental cues/tools they can give you to go over to convince

yourself otherwise on this issue.

Good luck man!

I think because we see ourselves every day we don't notice it as much as

people who don't see us very often. Maybe you could post a before &

after picture of yourself on your mirror to remind you that " Yes I have

lost over 100 lbs!! " We all have " fat days " no matter what size we

are! I was one that I never saw myself as big till I saw a picture of

myself or until I caught myself in the mirror. Then I was like " OMG!

That's not me!! "

Mike T,

Do you have any of your old pants? Why don't you hang them up on the

wall along with a pair you are currently in? Maybe that would be a

good visual to help strike it home for you.

I recently bought a pair of jeans in my goal size. As soon as I have a

surgery date, they are going up on the wall. Since I'm still dealing

with insurance and everything, I'm too chicken to put them up yet. I'm

afraid I'll jinx it.

Right now looking at them, I laugh and have to say I don't think there

is ANY way I'll ever get in them, they look SOOOO small. But I'm sure

going to try!!

Mikey,

Your head is playing games with you. I still have this problem; it

isn't as bad as it used to be but I have days were I feel big again!!

Or days when a size 8 feels big (don't slap me!!) I know a size 8

isn't big in my head. This is when you need to get out the shirt you

saved, or the pants you saved or the before pictures and compare them

to now. I take out and old pair of size 24 shorts, that were so tight

on me they hurt, they would dig into my skin. I should have been in a

size 26.. I can fit both legs in to one leg hole. I lay my size 8

shorts on top of them and see the difference. I go to the park and RUN

with my kids, I can run now. I think of wow moments like last

Christmas when I was up at 5am and didn't go to bed until 1am the next

morning. I could have never done these things pre op. Think of the

cool thinks you can do now or go try something that you have been

holding back on.

I so understand where you are coming from!!!!! Hang in there!!!

I still struggle (after 20 years) with still feeling fat and disgusting.

When I walk past a mirror and glance at myself it stops me dead in my tracks

because I see a 210 pound woman and not the underweight Lady I am today. I

wish I knew the " magical " answer to fixing it. Even after years of therapy

and countless Eating Disorder Clinic stays, there are still many days I feel

and actually see myself as a fat, disgusting blob. I hear people whispering

about some fat person and I just know in my mind that they are talking about

me. Also when I hear people talk about how bones are beautiful I want to

lose even more weight. My thinking/thought process has gotten so screwed up

since I had WLS, I never obsessed about my weight before surgery. I am very

interested in hearing how other people have gotten the fat person out of

their mind.

Mike,

The first time I went shopping for clothes after some significant

weight loss.....I walked out of the dressing room and asked the

clerk " does this mirror make you look smaller? " I was serious! My

friend with me carried on because I kept trying on clothes too big

and was going to buy them. I just couldn't " SEE " . I talked to my

RNY surgeon my next visit and he said it sometimes take 3 YEARS

before we can really " SEE " ourselves. Obvious body image problem

but I really can't imagine how this could be except I know it must

be true. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who had this

happen.
