Guest guest
Thanks for the reply, her bar wasn't long enough at first. After finding the group and discovering the proper length my husband had to adjust it. we are taking her back to the doctor tomorrow. I am guessing she will have to have a healing cast for at least a week. All of this is just so frustrating. I guess we had her foot held to the back of the shoe too tight since it is a pressure sore?? Freeman

Guest guest
, Good luck with healing the sore - BTDT - not fun but the cast is really a good choice for healing. The heel likely was not seated properly - and because it was rising up the wrong part of the boot was pressing on the wrong part of her heel (make sense?). When the heel rises up and the strap is cinched down it presses the heel into the padding in the back where the padding should be pressing above the heel itself on the ankle. So for sure, don't stop pushing the heel into the bottom of the shoes, if anything, press harder and make sure to flex her toes up as far as you can and then cinch the strap. Then dorsiflex again and press on the tongue/strap and cinch further if needed. Check it a few times if needed and re-adjust if needed. Then tighten the laces. And you don't have to do them to the top hole. Pull that tongue way down so it's level or below the top of the boot (cut the tongue keeper slit higher if you have to) and tighten her boot at the ankle in the second hole down. That's a fine way to do it if you need to. You'll be able to use the top hole soon enough. Happy baby feet, get the sore healed and try again. Don't be discouraged if it's not healed when you get the cast off. Just have them put on another cast and give it more time. It might take a couple of casts. And that area is going to be tender when it's out of the cast so it's very, very important that you get her heel down or the sore will come right back. We're here for you if you need help - I've been right where you are but I didn't figure it out for a long time and my daughter suffered because of it. Darbi had sore issues for over 7w... :~{ but we made it through and she's happy as can be in her DBB. Hang in there! Keep us informed how she's doing, we're here for you. Guest guest
Thank you for the response. We went to the ortho doc today and Kaitlin got a healing cast. I showed the doctor the flyer for the new Markell shoes and adjustable torso bar. I also voiced my complaints about the shoes and bar that we recieved last week. He agreed that the Markell shoes and bar with plates will be better and not only prescribed them to us, but called and spoke with the orthotist as well. The orthotist put in an order to Markell (for larger shoes!) and a new bar. The new DBB should be ready next week...hopefully Kaitlin will be ready by then. The doctor says that we caught the purple blister early enough that it should heal quickly. I also asked about the plastizote inserts and we will have those too. Her doctor was suprisingly supportive although he is not yet certified in the Ponseti Method, he stated that he is studying the method and attends Ponseti conventions. He seemed rather inviting of the information I had to offer and willing to follow the protocol. I hope that things will go uphill from here. Her foot is set at 70 degrees, but her first bar was too short and her shoes too small..I hope that those problems will be resolved when she gets her new setup next week. The odd thing is that the orthotist said that they had started to use the Markell shoes instead of the " walk-ins " ...the shoes we got last week were not made by Markell...how odd... Guest guest
I never took a picture of the shoes she had... We gave them back to the brace shop to donate to South Africa. They were made by a company called " Walk-in " They didn't have any pads or cushion, just hard leather! The heel stitch seam was poking through on the inside although that's how they were made. The bar was too short and about 3/4 inch wide and made of plain unfinished aluminum in the form of a V. I am glad that we caught her sore early too. Even though it was almost black by the time we caught it...now it is a lighter purple with a large red spot around it. I guess we live and learn. As for the insert, I appreciate the advice. I would rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them. I doubt our brace shop knows how to put them in. They had to call Markell to find out what shoes I was requesting. I am very thankful that I found this group. I have learned so much in the files and messages over the past few days. Glad to hear that your daughter is doing well. I would like to see the pictures...just for curiosity of what could have happened if I had not had all of the advice and information available on this website. Guest guest
Hey jennifer, So glad to hear you got that pressure sore before it got so bad! I have a pic of Darbi's if you want to feel good about your fantastic parenting for a while hehe... That's interesting that you got some other brand of shoes... did you take any pics to show us what you got? If so - send them to the picture list when you get a chance. I'm dying to see! As far as the plastizode... I am not entirely convinced that the new shoes really need them. But for some babies maybe they do. We have not had a single problem with our shoes that don't have them in them (they re-designed the Markell shoes last summer to have an enlarged heel pocket and padding at the ankle which is supposed to take the place of adding the plastizode) and Darbi went into those shoes only a month or so after finally healing up her sore. Our first pair had the insert - and the bottom of it is what caused the sore (no - I caused the sore but her heel was pressing into the plastizode and I know this because the orthotist did the lipstick check and it marked up the insert). So I am a little leery of the insert - but only because we had such a problem. When I examine the new style Markell shoes they really do seem to mimic how the insert applies to the foot and this is why I don't feel it's necessary for all babies. But... I hear they're still using the insert in Iowa regardless of the new style shoes so for whatever that's worth... They aren't using them at our brace shop and apparently are having great results with just the new style boots. So just watch it - if you see that purple mark come back and you're sure you're seating the heel in all the way you can rip it out and see if that helps. It's not like you can't have another put in if you want. Or... maybe ask them to just give you the inserts and show you where to put them (maybe they don't know though??) and try the boots without them first and see if you have problems or she slips. That is what I would do - but there are many here who use the insert and love it - at least you have the information to decide for yourself. There is some discussion about how it helps form the heel properly - Darb's heel looks great - nice and rounded out just like her normal foot so for us it's not an issue but it may very well be for some other babies. At any rate - enjoy your happy little girl now and let us know how it goes with her next appointment. I love it when I hear people catch these things sooner than I did! Whoohoo!
