Guest guest Posted August 25, 2004 Report Share Posted August 25, 2004 I guess this isn't really a high priority question, but what has been everyone's experience with footed baby clothes/pajamas either over casts or with a DBB? I have been trying to buy only clothes for the baby with no feet, but have gotten several things as gifts that have little feet in them. Even people who know that he is going to have a clubfoot haven't been thinking about this and have been buying little outfits with feet in them. They are considered outfits and not pajamas, however I use them for sleeping and daytime. If I received any outfits with feet in them and I knew where they came from I returned them for credit. Also, if it was a cheaper brand, I would just cut the feet out. You do what you have to do. Luckily I have a girl so this summer has been great, I could put her in a dress without the cute little bottoms that match, or the little sleeveless jumpers that snap in the crotch. I know most of you have boys so maybe overalls outfits and overall shorts outfits would work best. Also the Walmart s brand Child O Mine makes 1 piece sleepers with no feet. You really have to look because they are always buried. Also, Gap outlet, if you have one near you makes 1 piece sleepers without feet. I love these the best! They are so soft. I have not found them at a regular Gap store, but its worth looking. They may be pricey though. At the outlet I found them for $9.99. Which is a little expensive (I'm cheap, especially when they grow so fast) but it is worth every penny if it makes your life easier. Needless to say, he hasn't been able to wear them. I'm thinking that he'll be able to wear this type of thing in the winter while he's out of his shoes for several hours, but I would never attempt to put the shoes on over them. There's no way the footed part will fit snuggly enough on the feet (and probably too thick as well) to be comfortable. I even checked to see if the footed part would fit over the shoes, but I had no luck with that either. I did take a couple of his footed jammies, cut the footed part off, and stitched around the leg to prevent unravelling. This at least allowed him to actually be able to wear some of them. I think I'm probably going to do this to a few more too, since he's outgrowing his current set of jammies and has footed ones that would fit him. No sense letting them go to waste, and I don't know if we'll be having another child or not. I might have to get a couple more of them this weekend because I don't know if they were on sale or not. They were $9.99 each, but $16.00 for two. They won't work for the DBB though. I kept a few that I didn't get gift receipts with and my sister in law cut the feet out and sewed the edge for me. They end up being a little short but at least we get use out of them. I usually search the stores for any outfit that has snaps up the legs. I saw someone suggest Walmart (Child of Mine) p.j.s. These work great. I also have gotten a few at Meijer's (Baby Trends) and Old Navy. We use the 's coveralls for daytime wear and also as p.j.s Overalls that have legs that snap are good also. Just watch for jeans or pants that have snaps up the legs. You will probably need to bring the pants down over his head and sometimes it can be a tight fit . Either that or you'll need to take the brace off to get the pants on. We too have been lucky this summer. We used sunsuits and dresses without any problems. For over the casts I would suggest knit pants from Old Navy. I'm not sure if they sell any for little boys but these worked really well for us this past spring when was in her casts. So if the outfits that you're receiving are newborn, 0-3 month size, then you should be able to use them. Sometimes the toe area can be snug depending on how much plaster is on the cast. When your baby is in the brace fulltime for 3 months, you won't be able to use footed outfits. Look for outfits that have snaps all the way around the crotch without closed ankle cuffs. You can also use regular pants (like sweat pants) but will have to physically take the brace off in order to change those pants (not a big deal for occasional use, but you'll want snapped crotch outfits for the majority of your clothes). Depending on what climate you live in, I also recommend the fleece jammies with the snaps. They're warm and convenient! Like those fuzy sleepers with the zipper and no leg snaps? I cut out the feet and put it on him, then to change him I just slipped it off his arms rather than slipping his legs out. s. I have added snaps to several pants that I got as gifts and were just too cute not to use. If the outfits had snaps and feet I cut the feet out and it did shorten them some but I just use them for pj's and they work good. If you would like me to add snaps for you to any of the outfits just drop me an e-mail and I will send you my pricing. Or if you are handy it is not that hard to do. I cut out the feet on some jammies and then I just gave away the rest and started buying snappers whenever I could find them. The saddest thing for me was my (very outdoorsey) friend had made Rose a pair of Marmet booties that between the casts and the DBB, she was never able to wear. My friend trapped the Marmet, skinned it, tanned the hide and made the booties. I did take her in to Sears for a portrait when she was 8 months old and put then on her then, but the booties did not make it into the photo! Rose is now almost 18 months old and I am just now getting away from the snappers on pj's. I hardly ever have to change her diaper in the middle of the night and if I do, her legs are long enough now that the brace dosn't get in the way. You can usually find them on sale, if not they are pretty expensive. We found a bunch of the summer patterns on sale for like 5 or 8 dollars recently. Since 's foot was a surprise at birth we had gifts already as well. With the casts, I actually didn't have much trouble fitting her leg inside the footed things. Especially if they have snaps and I would leave a couple snaps undoen for the extra room. As for the DBB -- by the tiem she started wearing that, she had outgrown all the footed stuff we had except for a few sleepers. If they were brand new, I actually returned most of them for daytime outfits without feet. I shopped yardsales for sleepers and cut the feet out of them. Who cares when you pay $.25 - $.50! I also found the sacklike sleepers to be a godsend! I have found them at Kmart and WalMart. And s carries a lot of them. I will miss them this winter as I have not found them larger than 9 months Hope that helps!! It's huge! And my favorite jammie too. I would love to get more. The really small footed sleepers are totally doable with the casts. But since Darbs was in the DBB at 5-1/2w she didn't get to wear any of them very long so if you're starting your treatment early and may not need a tenotomy pick and choose the ones you really like and have him wear them a lot during casting, while you can. I still have some lying around that were given to us that she will likely not wear unless I decide to dress her in jammies all day long this winter. Probably won't happen. Watch out for footless sleepers that only have one side snaps. They can work, but are better with an older baby who doesn't need as frequent diaper changes, and who doesn't ruin 3 sets of clothes a day pooping. I didn't notice a bunch of those I got on clearance were only snapped on one side till much later (months) and it wasn't worth finding the receipt to take them back. But they do work, just not real easy to change a diaper with. For whatever it's worth, the snap clothes for girls suck. Boys can get away with it, but the girl stuff is few and far between and I haven't found anything I have ever liked. So Darbi wore a lot of stretch pants which I could pull down and change her diaper just fine in. I used to dress her for the next day at night and she slept in stretch pants and diaper shirts most of last winter instead of jammies. For a boy, I liked pants as well (with my two non CF boys) so if I had it to do again I would use pants and diaper shirts with a boy in the DBB over snap outfits. I just like the way a baby looks in clothes that don't look like jammies and little boy babies with cute little cordoury pants and turtlenecks are just so cute! It is a lot easier for when you do have to change pants to have the DBB with the gold non-adjustable bar. Just take the shoe off the bar, slip the pants over the shoes, the other side over the shoe and bar and the opposite to get a new pair on. I love how the shoes attach to this bar, not only because you can take one shoe off easily and change pants but because I feel it's best to put the shoes on without the bar in the beginning so you can be sure the heel is down. This is not really doable with the red adjustable bar. We did the gold non-adjustable for a long time but I stopped taking the shoes off the bar about a year ago IIRC. Now we use the adjustable bar and it's fine. So if you can, ask for the non-adjustable gold bar for the first few months.
