Hi Jeedu - welcome! I have two boys with hearing loss. Sam is 11 and wears two

hearing aids; Tom is 13 and was recently implanted (2-1/2 months ago). Tom

continues to wear his hearing aid on his other (non-implanted) ear. Tom has the

Freedom also and is really liking it but made the same comment about how it

initially sounded. he told me that everyone he hears sounds like they're going

through puberty! I laughed and told him that everyone he knows IS going through

puberty! He's been activated for about 1-1/2 months.

Does Hussein have friends around his age with implants or hearing aids? We

found that helped tom probably more than anything - there's a young man who's 16

who lives close to us and was implanted about a year before Tom. It was great

to be able to ask him questions, etc.

Last December he had a knock on the implanted side of his head the internal

device failed. We live in Sri Lanka where cochlear implant surgery is very

new so we had to go to Singapore for explanting and re-implanting. He was

implanted with the freedom and switched-on on 4th January. He hated the

sound from the freedom initially and said I sounded like a squeaky mouse.

Thank god he is getting use to it now.

Since we came back from Singapore and he started school he has been feeling

very lonely and sad. Says his friends are not talking to him anymore and no

one even asked how he was doing after surgery and switch-on.

Has any of your kids gone through a similar experience. I don't know how to

deal with his emotional feelings right now.

First, let me begin by saying welcome to the site! I am sure this is going to be

insightful and helpful to you in soo many ways!

My name is Keisha and I am the mother of a 10 year old with a profound loss in

his right ear. We are not getting ready to have an implant but just like your

son, my son is worried about what his friends will think! I assure him that they

will be fine with all the changes and that if they arent, well then they simply

are not his friends. This may be a bit more difficult for a 15 year old since

they are going through soo many changes- both physically and socially!

I am sure that i am not the only parent that will make this suggestion, but

are there any other teens his age that have the same issues? Are there any

support groups that you might be able to find in your area with kids his age? I

know that is a hard one but i will do some looking around and if i come across

ANYTHING I will certainly pass it on! Until then, look out for all the wonderful

welcomes from the site and all the great advice that everyone will offer!

Hi there,

My name is Kristie I am the parent of a deaf 5 yr old. I joined a

couple of weeks ago. Then I went out of town so I am just now giving

my introduction. I am not sure if I am in the right place. It seems a

lot of you live on the East coast. I am from California, but I now

live in Salem Oregon, which I absolutely love. If it wasn't for family

I would live on the East coast because the services seem like they are

so much better.

My daughter was born with a mild hearing loss that the newborn

screening missed. I started asking questions when she was 1 yr. I new

something wasn't right. I wasn't able to convince DRs till she was 18

months, when I yelled her name. By the time she had her first

timpanigram she was almost 2. He determined their was a loss and I

should contact our local school district, which I did. She has been in

Deaf/HOH pre-school ever since. I also took my first ASL class at this

same time. We have had 2 ABR tests, the last on 9-11-03. It was 100

decibals, which it where it has stayed. I was originally told that she

didn't qualify for a CI. I never questioned that. I didn't know until

a year ago that there is no way to tell for sure without an MRI. Then

I started the process last October. She is going in for surgery on May

17th, 2006.

Hi Kristie,

Welcome to the group, I'm new also (been here a few weeks at

most). I'm the one with all the questions! :-) By the way, I'm Robin. We

currently reside in Memphis, TN although I'm originally from Wisconsin.

I have 3 girls- Constance 6yro, Breanna 3yro, is almost 2. Breanna

is my different child still exploring the original diagnosis of mild HL.

is is my almost 2yro that doesn't say but 13 words, and Constance is

my smarty pants kindergartener!!!

We are in a different situation than you, we are 'battling "

our way thru doctors to get CORRECT diagnosis' and a direction. Finding

out we are " Not delayed enough " for Early Intervention Services, etc.

Hope you feel welcome here these ladies have been great help

to me in just the last 2 weeks!

It seems like a lot of people wear both a CI and a hearing aid. It

seems to work well for a lot of people. My daughter is 4 and she

wears both with no problem. Our implant center never suggested that

it could be a problem. The research I've done suggests that it is a

good thing.

Hi Kristie. I am Tammy and I currently live in Kentucky. However, when

I joined this list I lived in Heidelberg, Germany moved to Kitzingen,

Germany, and then to Richmond, Virginia. Now of course I am in

Kentucky. I don't know what I would have done with out these fine folks

and all of the total years/experiences to gather the vast wealth of

wisdom. Truly we all pitch in to support and advise or just listen. I

hope you will find the support this other " family " has given to mine.
